New Guy isn't actually a commie. He just knows that Jess wouldn't join a union that didn't adhere 100% to her political beliefs and would never work together with anyone who has a different set of beliefs. But he also knows that he needs to include her to have any meaningful bargaining power.
So he puts on a stupid hat and a cheap removable tattoo and plays communist for a while so that he can ensure that his colleagues have as good work conditions as possible.
