Because this is kind of important, a republic is not a type of democracy. To the best of my admittedly layman understanding, the only place where direct democracy is a thing is on the very granular local level... where you elect your representative plus a few other positions. Why bother voting at all if you won't bother to learn at least a general overview of what's going on?
