Who's the CBS employee and what's the title of the book? I need something new to read

Bernard Goldberg and the book is called "Biased", which itself is a book length expansion of a nasty tell all article he wrote for the Wall Street Journal in 1996 called "Networks Need A Reality Check".

The book was basically the cornerstone for the right/Fox News rank and file attack on all non-Fox News outlets in the late 90s and Bernard Goldberg became a pariah among the left when he wrote it. Especially given how he named names at CBS, in particular Dan Rather, for being assholes of the highest degree. However, around 2001-2002, when Fox News was beginning it's zenith period of being the top news outlet on cable, Goldberg got banished by the right when he got brought onto a Fox News show and basically stated that Fox News had a lot of the same problems he saw at CBS, as far as the network having the same biased issues but from the right perspective.

The book kind of fell into obscurity along with Bernard Goldberg after that, but Matt Tiabbi recently interviewed Goldberg and dedicated an entire chapter of his last book (Hate Inc) talking up "Biased" and interviewing Goldberg and why he wrote it, and why it was more than just a thesis about the corrupting influence of the left in mainstream media by pointing out how Goldberg named names and pretty much shattered Dan Rather's false facade of being America's cranky but lovable grandfather.

I've been telling people about the numbers problem the US has. Namely, that we're fucking huge. We're the third most populous nation in the world, behind China and India. And we're a free society that's actually somewhat efficient.

China is an authoritarian shithole where they could literally have you shot for leaving your apartment block during quarantine, and they definitely haven't reported their numbers truthfully. India tried to lock down early on but they're losing their grip on it and now their numbers are spiking. No matter how you cut it, there's no way to have so many people in a nation and not have ugly numbers to show for it.

Now let's look at it objectively. Currently, we're at almost 6.5 million reported cases of COVID-19. That is almost exactly 2% of our population reported as being infected. With those numbers, the lethality rate is ~3%. The number of infected is likely a lot higher because we just can't test everybody like many (much smaller) European nations and South Korea did, but the number of dead by COVID is likely close to the truth because anything we miss gets compensated by how much the numbers get bloated by the odd motorcycle crash. So lethality is closer to 2%, if not lower.

The Spanish Flu infected about one third of the entire world population. One third. We haven't reached one tenth yet. We're around two tenths of one tenth. There's not much Trump (or Hillary, if she were in power) could have done. This is a viral infection with respiratory symptoms and a long latency and incubation period. It's going to spread no matter how hard you lock shit down. It's important to take measures against it, absolutely. But this shit got politicized because... again, Orange Man Bad.

I'm not going to say we should be cheering and holding great rallies to celebrate our pre-emptive defeat of COVID-19. This thing is going to be running through America for a long time and we'll be feeling its effects (both in terms of public health and the economy) even longer, and trying to be more sanitary (wash your fucking hands!) and social-distance-y is a good idea regardless. But all told Trump didn't do nearly as bad as he could, and definitely not nearly as bad as people say he did.

All in the narrative of making COVID "a much worst virus that'll kill everybody, so everyone wear a mask that fucking does jack-shit, but you are going to wear it because we tell you to. Also you can't go to work and have to stay inside until we tell you it's time to get out. Unless you are a part of BLM riots."

That's the narrative that I see, so excuse me that I for one don't trust any short of graph about COVID. But with all of the lying bullshit going around, it's hard to know what is actually true and what's false, since no one in the position of power is telling the truth.

If the people feeding the data are wrong, incompetent or malicious, the data is going to be skewed.

That's what margins of error are for: for every doctor that falsifies a death by COVID, another death goes unreported for some reason, and the final outcome is more or less the same. The death ratios are within the expected values compared to other nations that had no rampant TDS and therefore no reason to try to inflate their counts. Either way, that's why those outbreaks get put through the statistical wringer after they're over and done with. All we can do is try to understand what went wrong with our models and what can we do to have more accurate models.

Anyway, the media and the DNC are overplaying their hand hard with Corona and it shows. Outside of hardcore TDS sufferers, most people are sick and tired of being told to stay home and wear masks because the message has been so damn aggressive. COVID-19 is a dangerous virus, yes. It's not just "a flu". It can really mess you up if you're not careful, and since we don't really understand what it does and how it works yet we don't know exactly how to prevent it.
