I thought their skulls never closed up because they're instead stretched out by the water collecting in the head, so the fontanelles never seal as they do with a normal infant.

Not a medical person at all, but I'd imagine it's because infant skulls plates aren't fused & can still stretch and grow. In an adult, I imagine a condition like that would be fatal much more quickly, since the skulls is pretty much fused & much harder.

That's part of why Luna's head is so misshapen now. As a result of her hydrocephalus, her head swelled, causing her fontanelles to expand and separate, leaving her skill very stretched and thin. After the surgery, the swelling went down, but the skull won't ever go back to it's 'normal' shape.
You can see in this video where mom is literally poking at her soft spot.

I'm surprised she lasted that long. These kids are pretty potato, right? There's clearly someone "there" but considering hydrocephaly is constant, constant pressure bearing down on your brain I expected it to be the sort of thing that kills a few days after birth, or a few months at most. Maybe I'm a cold bitch but what kind of a life is it where you can't even learn how to crawl because your head is three times the size of your body, literally larger than an adult's?

Also double fun fact: apparently it was believed until like the 60's that babies wouldn't retain the memory of surgical operations so they just fucking strapped them down and cut them open, no anesthesia.

Cognitive ability may be effected and ususally is, but not always. In these extreme cases it probably is, but you can even have normal pressure hydrocephalus in dementia patients.

Sometimes it just totally pushes the skull plates apart as seen in this pic of Roona.

This is why they do head measurements and stuff, the normal well baby visists and check ups people like Luna's mother are against. Yet shes not against all the services she can get now. You really do not ususally see children as bad off as Luna in the US because of all the prenatal testing we do. Mainly you see it now in Achondroplasic dwarfs since it's part of their diagnosis and it does not effect them cognitively.

You would be forgiven for thinking the name isn’t Nevaeh but “Nevaeh, it’s heaven spelled backwards” because I’ve never heard anyone just the name without adding the explanation.

Maybe after it became so popular in white trash circles it morphed into “Nevaeh, but I named her that before Tammy, Candy and Raven named theirs Nevaeh. They copied me.”

All part of the fun of existing in a family which is run as a Potato Cult. Normal kids get reassigned from sons and daughtters to devotees and helpers to the mAgIckal aNgeL, while Mummy (i's nearly always Mummy) spirals into an obsessive focus on the one kid who's destined for early death due to a mixure of overcompensation for normal, healthy feelings of disgust and guilt at birthing such a medical mess in the first place. I really feel sorry for these kids, forced into this endless theatre, unable to express any genuine feelings and lacking all real attention from their parents. It's a weird combination of emoional neglect and abuse.

I remember wha Lola and Claire's crazy mother did to their son when he was caught expressing his ttrue feelings and calling his sisers retards. Her reaction and her punishment was so extreme is was so obvious his crime was telling the truth and by doing so, tearing down the saccharine image that had been consructed around the girls and family.

If I remember correctly, Gwen overheard Cal using the word "retard" in a conversation with his friends, not even talking about the potatoes. She absolutely shamed him to the point that he was bawling and begging for forgiveness and then forced him to write some apology essay about how much he loves his sisters and would never do that again. Poor kid seems like a really great and accomplished young man, but his mom chose to worship at the potato altar instead.

The worst instance I know of was of these fundie parents that had a miscarriage around 20 weeks, after the fetus was discovered to have a condition incompatible with life that they of course refused to abort. After the miscarriage they brought their young daughters, 3 and 5 I believe, into room, put them face to face with their dead fetus sibling and forced them to say goodbye. Their blatant PTSD symptoms continuing weeks and months later were just attributed to "grief".

Wait, what? Jesus, that's awful. It's one thing to tell a child "Mommy had a baby in her belly, but the baby died & is in Heaven now" or whatever you want to tell your kid, but to put them on the spot, on camera? Christ. Do none of these nutjobs ever think about the mental or emotional well being of their 'normal' children?
