The showrunner threw him under the bus on social media, and linked his tweets to this current "larger problem" in America. Which is a bit odd, considering that the vast majority of these jokes have nothing to do with ethnicity. And the one that do are mild at worst.

Who's old enough to remember when the exact same crowd was demanding that Disney rehire James Gunn after tweets of a similar age at the time (that were far worse than this) and celebrated when they did? It was Hollywood that not only gave him back GOTG3, but also a big budget Suicide Squad film.
Not to say that they shouldn't of, but this is hypocrisy at its finest.

Oh okay so I guess it was totally fine for ISIS to destroy those old Islamic historical sites in the Middle East because of idolatry, same with the Taliban in Afghanistan when they destroyed the Buddhas of Bamyan.
