Normally I don't engage in conspiracy theory crafting. But this sounds like they were aiming for a deliberate leak, and instead they got something messier.

His patheos blog goes back to april 2002. His personal blog probably back even further. His EWTN appearances look to be 97, 99, 00, 09, 12. So you might be spot on, though he did write a few books that you can still find praise for in various catholic spheres. From things I've pieced together, what got him into touring is there was a period around the late 90s and oughts about Catholicism pushing hard on evangelism and there was a lot of interviews and stuff about converts - especially those from other denominations. That's probably when the fame went to his head.
