This is incredibly late, but I'm Gen-Z and I'm in the same boat you're in. Seemingly nobody in my generation can see the forest for the trees and it's deeply worrying how many of them would prefer vast economic devastation over corona. I hate to sound like a doomer, but they do realize it took the world a decade plus to get out of the last economic collapse, right?
And that people drifted to actual extremist ideologies (not the ones screamed about on Twitter, but the real deal shit) en masse because those ideologies promised to get them out of the depression, right?
And that the only reason the world got out of that economic collapse was because we had a world war where 40 million people died..... right???

I'm increasingly starting to think that the Democrats are under the delusion that they actually have a fighting chance this election and if so they are actually way, way dumber than I thought. There seems very little other reason why they'd keep throwing every single one of their precious lamb issues directly under the spike-tired bus just to defend a man who will be dead within the year.

Considering how Hillary had been hovering over the Primaries like a pantsuited vulture, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a power play to give us Bodycount Woman vs. Orange Man 2: Electric Boogaloo. Hillary already has a ton of visibility -- people know who Hillary is a lot more than Biden, plus a lot of inertia from her 2016 campaign -- and a relatively "young" (fuck, are we calling 72 young now? What a geriatric election) woman replacing a senile white male rapist would be a huge boost to the DNC's voting base's enthusiasm.
Of course, this is all very silly., even. But it would be just so much fun to see Hillary trying to roll in as the Great Savior... and then lose again.
Unfortunately, I put the odds of the DNC running Clinton again at 30 to 40 percent. The idea that the DNC would swap out a man accused of sexual assault for a woman who actively surpressed victims would be outrageously tone deaf, which means the DNC would be all for it.
I look forward to "Russia-gate 2: The Rainbow Coalition" in which Putin gets China, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Germany to interfere on Trump's behalf.

I think they fear that they would become irrelevant if they took a campaign off. That it would be better to keep dragging themselves through a barbed wire field with bear traps around their ankles than to rebuild the party. That a "third" party in such a scenario might actually be a viable approach, leaving Democrats to whither away.

Or I guess more the point, I didn't believe a story where they were both in school transpired the way she says it did when her own sexual honor is at stake. And even if the story had a basis in truth, I don't think something that happened 30 years ago when they were both dumbass students necessarily has any bearing on the relevant matter of "Is Kavanaugh a good candidate for the supreme court"?

I believe SOMETHING happened with Reade that shouldn't have happened. How serious that is up for debate, as "he hugged her, she didn't want to be hugged" is something that shouldn't have happened, being that Joe was the older person in the interaction.
She's been saying for 30 years something happened. The media just completely ignored it. There's also the ages when this happened. Fords story was a bunch of dumb students at a kegger. If this had been a story from Joe's highschool days, I'd have also been "really? jesus christ come the fuck on.. But dude was already in politics and putting the moves on girls way younger than him.
Joe is sort of creepy and very handsy. Now again, I don't think that is a crime by itself. And I can definitely see how Joe could make someone uncomfortable and not realize it. Which if that's all this was, it should be a simple matter of putting to bed any time over the past three fucking decades.
(Conversely, if Ford's story had been from after Kavanaugh had started his legal career, then yes, I would have wanted a lot more attention paid to what the fuck had gone down.)
I guess more the point: You are asking "why now". The answer is its not just now. She's talked about it before, publically and on the record. People are only giving a shit now because Fox News decided there was enough hay to be made running with it now that he's effectively the Democratic nominee, and its exposing the democrats & the media (I repeat myself) for their double standards and fucking sociopathic ignoring of their own supposed scruples.
Disclaimer, I had buddy nearly get his colleigate life ruined because he pumped & dumped some girl who had been after his dick for like 3 months. He would have been expelled for non-criminal rape and had it on his college record, except for one of his female friends talked to the girl's female friends who forced her to walk back her story and get the proceedings to stop. He ended up transferring schools regardless, and fighting this made his grades suffer and he had a bit of a drug & booze problem from the stress.
So yeah, I definitely don't believe all women and generally think they usually lie to try to avoid social stigma when they slut it up from their teens to their twenties.
(He was sort of an asshole, but he didn't deserve to have his life ruined because of it.)
