Homestuck is known to be like open to interpretation(even are things that are clearly obviously). that's why when John is trans headcanon doesn't make sense with me because some of the evidence they used can be interpret it as something else. They (Kate and Aysha) try to explain it away as it just being John refusing to be introspective, but I think that's solid BS because I always thought John was meant to be the 'straight boring white dude' of the whole thing, especially with his utter disinterest in all matters woke.
Throughout Johns development if anyone paid attention was that Johns has probably always been depressed, the reason it wasnt so obvious in the beginning is because John is a God at repressing his emotions, which is shown by him only striking a frown after people he cares about die like after what happened in Game Over and when his Dad died.Homestuck is known to be like open to interpretation(even are things that are clearly obviously). that's why when John is trans headcanon doesn't make sense with me because some of the evidence they used can be interpret it as something else.
Like John's depression for example of him being trans. First of all that's the dumbest evidence because one, depression happens to everyone, just not trans people. Second, there's other reasons why he can be depressed. Like losing his father and never seeing him again or knowing that his friends are not the same people after the retcon. Maybe the adventure took a really toll on his psyche after years of settling in Earth C and realized he feels it not the same anymore. In end, John was and still is Homestuck.

Also the other thing with him is that he is Lonely, very very Lonely just like Jade, in fact this theme is kinda shoved in our face multiple times "subtley" especially in his pesterquest route which is written by Andrew himself.
And his desire to not be lonely is his main problem thats been shoved in our faces constantly and its probably why hes so good at repressing his emotions making this some shit about John being trans with all that just makes it more unbelievable and really laughable imo.
That really got shoe horned into the narrative, like that really blindsided me.This is kind of why the conclusion of Dave's character arc, if one could even call it that, bothered me. Basically telling us that his whole deal is that he's a closet case. Its sort of flattens all the character's conflicts into something simple. And really, I preferred it when Homestuck didn't make a big deal out of this sort of thing. The narrative didn't have to stop for Rose gayngst when she started dating Kanaya; it just happened.
I've been rereading Homestuck with a friend for the past couple months and I honestly don't understand what is so appealing about either Rose or Dave to begin with, neither my reading partner nor a friend who is a long term Homestuck RPer can articulate it either. I have wildly different memories of these characters from reading HS during its peak, but I'm starting to think a majority of that characterization was purely fanonical. At least up to nearing the end of 5:2 they're both just kind of cardboard edgy kids that very occasionally do something vaguely quirky ( w ), they've been so bland that we got bored of reading their logs and started doing ridiculous accents to fill the void. Some people were speculating that he made Rose become an alcoholic to make the relationship interesting, because it was honestly boring.
The problem with Rose is that she is actually interesting, but everything that's interesting about her immediately vanishes after her Grimdark stage ends. Dave's just excessively easy to self-insert into.I've been rereading Homestuck with a friend for the past couple months and I honestly don't understand what is so appealing about either Rose or Dave to begin with, neither my reading partner nor a friend who is a long term Homestuck RPer can articulate it either. I'm starting to think most of the appeal was how easy both of them are tocosplayproject onto, like stock harem anime protagonists, just enough there to identify with but not too much lest you alienate your audience.
I like Karkat and Kanaya but Dave and Rose being together with them caused all 4 of those characters to drag each other down mutually imo.The problem with Rose is that she is actually interesting, but everything that's interesting about her immediately vanishes after her Grimdark stage ends. These two were actually the most interesting characters before the trolls started coming up. The trolls ruined everything.
Rose being alcoholic could be interesting premise because it challenge their relationship as a whole. I can't see Kanaya being codependent relationship with drunken Rose. It can easily become more toxic than people literally thinks it is especially it's mentally exhausting for the the non alcoholic partner. Then I remembered that Rose and Kanaya are only gay relationship so no drama aka no character arc for them.I always found it ridiculous that Hussie made the goth snarky girl and her hipster brother date their gay alien counterparts. There's having similar interests to forge relationships but when your boyfriend acts exactly like you, there's something wrong. Some people were speculating that he made Rose become an alcoholic to make the relationship interesting, because it was honestly boring.
I can understand where you're coming from because like I was okay with rose and Dave. They had interesting things in the beginning for example, their relationship with their Guardian.I've been rereading Homestuck with a friend for the past couple months and I honestly don't understand what is so appealing about either Rose or Dave to begin with, neither my reading partner nor a friend who is a long term Homestuck RPer can articulate it either. Rose and Kanaya had a good dynamic going, but then they got together and shortly after they became very uninteresting as a couple. Especially towards the end they became the boring married uwu lesbians; I miss the Snarky Horseshit days.I like Karkat and Kanaya but Dave and Rose being together with them caused all 4 of those characters to drag each other down mutually imo.
Either that or they just happened to become less interesting around that time.
People used to ship Rose and Kanaya together because they had chemistry. Now that the fandom's main reason to ship them is I LOVE WLW they no longer have to try to portray them in an interesting way.Rose and Kanaya had a good dynamic going, but then they got together and shortly after they became very uninteresting as a couple. Karkat just straight up stopped being a character after the retcon and became merely Dave's Boyfriend. His inner conflicts and relationships with other characters no longer mattered. He became an accessory to Dave's development in a way that would've pissed off a lot of people had he been a girl. Dave got flattened as a character too, but at least the narrative gestured at a character arc for him and he was allowed to interact in meaningful way with people who weren't Karkat. Karkat and Kanaya basically stopped having any friendships (or romances-what about their other quadrants?) outside of Dave and Rose. For all that people say readers' facsination with the trolls derailed the direction of the story, the remaining troll characters ended up becoming little more than props.
