Games you gave up on.

Celeste. I’m not actually sure how far I was into the game, I just know that I was stuck on a puzzle and looked up a playthrough of that particular level, only to find out that that segment took place near the one hour mark of a five hour video. I also wasn’t a fan of the total lack of subtlety in the messaging, so I didn’t particularly care to finish the game solely motivated by the story.

You’d think that saving your progress every screen would make the game less frustrating, but honestly it just totally ruined the pacing and sense of progression for me.
 
• When I got to the city in Pillars of Eternity and was showered in quests I just gave up. Not just once, but all three times I tried powering through the game. The depth and writing is fantastic but my god does it turn into a chore. Maybe it's because I haven't played much Baulder's Gate since I was an aimless kid but it really has me thinking a turn-based system a la D;OS2 would have worked much better.

• Tyranny is just bad. I quit not long after what people seem to consider the midpoint of the game where you choose which faction to support/blame. The writing is poor; nuance is suddenly dropped when it's convenient, your choices get swept away at certain points, and not picking a clear side in the intro will fuck you. I'll try to go back to it because I'm a horrible masochist for particularly bad RPGs, and I want to see how it ends without cheating and watching some asshole play it on YouTube.

• Dragon Age: Origins because I just don't enjoy the characters and they talk too much.
 
I gave up on RDR2. The game itself is solid and enjoyable for the most part. However, I have only a limited amount of time to play vidya these days and I don't want to spend it riding around for 30 minutes so I can get in one gun battle and listen to 15 minutes of dialog.

I can see how people liked the story, but it failed to grab me for whatever reason.

Borderlands 2 (fuck you, Randy)

Hell, all of them. I'm getting too old and jaded and I just don't have the time I used to. It really annoys me sometimes, I think I may end up just marathoning a bunch of them next time I have vacation days to burn.

I struggled with it for months, no lie. Totally gave up and came back twice. Then it clicked and I beat the hell out of it in 2 weeks of nonstop play. Most rewarding game I've played in years. Don't give up, the *click* is worth it.

Most recently I dropped Far Cry 5: New Dawn as it was just too similar too soon to Far Cry 5, but I do plan on going back to it at some point.

Probably the biggest thing I've dropped in recent years though was an attempted replay of Knights of The Old Republic in 2015, I waited too long to replay it and though I stuck with it for as long as I could and devoted a chunk of time to it I eventually had to stop as I found the game to just be too dated and just got bored.

The writing of the game is still great of course, but almost every environment is the same small number of assets copy pasted endlessly, games have just advanced too far past the point where that's acceptable for a 3D game.

Even by 2003 standards it felt a bit lazy though, like the opening city planet where every building looks exactly the same, certainly when you're talking a skybox you can do a little better than that?
 
God Of War 2, never made it past the first translator battle on Titan mode, i tried for hours if not days, but couldn't do it, i probably didn't upgrade the Blades of Athena or any other sub-weapon enough to survive the battle, i will give it another try one day, but as long i have something else to play, i have no reason to revisit GoW 2 nowadays
 
Like many others here, as I've gotten older, fewer and fewer games actually end up "finished" anymore. But a few are notable for various reasons.

Psychonauts - Meat Circus has the reputation it has for a reason. 3 hours of bashing into that wall, and I noped out.
Persona 3 - The first few months of the game are so repetitive, I never actually saw the part of the game that's supposed to be interesting.
Lightning Returns - Actually liked this game quite a bit, but the last boss was tedious, took forever, and I died. Just decided not to try a second time.
Drakengard 3 - Another one I liked, but it came out right after the PS4 launched, so my PS3 wound up on the bedroom's TV and I just sorta forgot about it.

This is an old one, but Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. The game was pretty impressive at the time, but after dozens of stupid block puzzles, I just lost interest.

I completely dropped Overwatch after the first few months because it got tedious and they made changes that cucked the casual playerbase. I am starting to lose interest in WoW Classic, being the first time I've every played WoW. I used to play league of legends a lot many years ago but the game got too toxic and repetitive for me. I stopped playing Stellaris completely after an update that made war, something I already was frustrated with, even more of a cancerous task, as well as making the game a hell of a lot more micro focused and less casual. Team Fortress 2 was a huge part of my life many years ago but I pretty much have just lost interest in playing.

I play like 2-3 games now, feeling like I'm going to have given up on all games within a few years a this rate. Casual gaming is the only thing that interests me anymore, so all these games making dumb ass decisions to be more "competitive" just totally kills them for me. That alone is probably why a majority of games I have played have lost me.
 
Sekiro

I loved the Souls series and Bloodborne but I couldn't be bothered with Sekiro. I don't really like stealth games all that much and this game really forces you into a certain playstyle in a way that the other games didn't. The art style is great and it's a well made game & everything, but it just wasn't doing it for me. I guess I just want to wham on shit with an ultra greatsword.

I now take a month to two months+ to finish a game. Just don't feel like playing and when I do, it's for about an hour, maybe 2. There is the odd time where I might play for an extended period every couple of months, either 1 long sitting or many short ones, so these long games that require constant play and investment I can no longer do.
 
Watch_Dogs. Could not for the life of me beat the last mission where your identity is exposed to the public and the cops are after your ass. I tried too many times and I still died or got captured. Frankly, I fucking hate this game. Why did I keep going, you ask? The side missions that revolve vigilante stuff was what kept me playing. Although they were repetitive as fuck I was entertained, somehow. It might just be me being awful at somw games but the fucking vehicle controls were driving me to suicide.

Sekiro whipped my ass pretty good at times, but I toughed it out to the end and I'm very glad I did as I think the game was absolutely stellar.

I find myself thinking back to it a lot, it's the first game in forever where even though it's been less than a year since I played it part of me wants to already play it again.

So I would recommend you give it another try, you're rewarded with a lot of really cool and beautiful environments.

Yeah, I forgot about Nioh, that's another recent game I dropped.

Nioh by contrast to the From games just felt like some busted ass shit, I appreciate a challenge but there is such a thing as poorly designed difficulty and Nioh was a perfect example, on top of the game was really ugly, looked exactly like a PS3 game, that's not really acceptable for a 2017 game.

To compare it to Sekiro, Sekiro was tough as hell but felt fair and well designed, Sekiro also wasn't the best looking game but still looked pretty good, there's no point in bothering with Nioh when Sekiro is out.
 
I never could get into World of Warcraft. I gave it a decent try, think I had a level 20 paladin before giving up. I just found it boring, and I'm not a big fan of MMOs to begin with. Most of them require crazy amounts of time to invest in. It's a game, not a full time job. Games are supposed to be about having fun.

GTA IV was one I gave up on as well. The driving felt really slippery and awkward, and I liked the more outlandish aspects of Vice City and San Andreas better than them trying to go all serious and realistic.

altered beast for genesis: screw your clunky controls

Metal Slug XX: I beat it once and just never played it again. No one saw me play it but was still embarrassing having to do continue 40 fucking times on the bosses combined

CoD MW2 on veteran: God forbid you move one inch before a NPC snipes you from way across the screen while still in cover
 
Yakuza 0. "Japanese GTA" my ass. I might go back to finish it eventually though. I even somewhat learned to competently play mahjong (aka poker for autistic chinks) to do the stupid minigame challenges.

Assassins Creed Origins. I spent 100+ hours mindlessly grinding all the terrible side missions and then just... stopped right near the end of the main plot.

Resident Evil 0. I've beaten every mainline RE (even 5 and 6) but I just can't deal with RE0's terrible inventory and dual-character shit.

Hollow Knight. Possibly the most boring Metroidvania I've ever experienced.

Wokenstein II. Although I didn't come close to finishing it because it's a tedious, generic shooter, I was exposed to enough left-wing propaganda during my time with it to inspire me to join my local socialist party and antifa organizations. Bernie 2020.
