I suspect a lot of crossover between r9k/blackpill/NEET types and trans culture. A lot of NEETs or similar losers have a misguided nostalgia for being a kid and teenager. It's not that high school was fun, it's just that they were allowed to not have a job, play vidya and watch anime without the pressures of paying bills. It's all about their failure to be a functioning adult.
By their mid-20s, they are filled with self-loathing, regret, and years of porn. Reinventing themselves as a girl sounds logical to them. They now have a goal (though the goalposts keep moving). They find a supportive community. They are politically topical and receive lots of attention they would never get as cis males. Hell, some of them even rave about how glad they are that now they can cry on others' shoulders and get support for their depression because girls are "allowed" to do that.
There's probably a huge psychological analysis that can be done on the connection of troonery and peter pan syndrome. The hatred of natural puberty, the mourning for what they perceive as a wasted youth, a longing to be small and cute, the infantilizing online culture. it's always stuck out to me.

You make a really good, interesting point. Even female troons are typically obsessed with being "smol soft bois" and otherwise infantilizing themselves and, like you said, being small and cute - they don't want to be strong, muscular men who are tall and so on, they want to be short smol feminine anime characters with pink hair and sparkles everywhere. It's pretty fucked up. But it definitely makes sense, especially with the metric ton of troons who don't work, don't go to school, and e-beg for money constantly because getting a job is transphobique.
I was just reading yesterday on that r/aita thread about the troon wearing giant-size hooker clothes to pick up his ten year old from school, a ton of people in there going "oh, she's just going through a second puberty! this is totally normal and natural for all transgirls!" and it's like... we are talking about a forty year old man here. A forty year old man is not going through a "second puberty". Not to mention the completely disgusting implications that tween girls dress like hookers and wear micro-minis and fishnets everywhere, which... no. Just no. But they're doing the job of infantilizing that creepy ass troon for him.

I made the Peter Pan syndrome connection a few years ago when a close trans friend straight up accused me of being a "grown up who doesn't believe in magic anymore". Ever since then I can't unsee it.
Hell, the whole story of Peter Pan fits will with a lot of the trans mindset. They're like Tinker Bell where they act as if they'll literally die if you stop believing in their gender delusions. The amount of magical thinking is off the charts.
It usually gets chalked up to the "second puberty" shit, but I think it's more like what you said about not wanting adult responsibilities and wanting to be a kid again.
I also suspect it functions as a good excuse for why they're not happy now in spite of supposedly finally doing what they've always dreamed of doing. They can always say "well, the only reason I'm not as happy as I thought I'd be is because I didn't get to transition as a child. I would totally be living the dream if I'd started back then". Those recent tweets someone posted where a troon is whining about cis people ruining his life because he didn't get to transition as a child reek of this.
Of course the growing number of very young transitioners ending up just as miserable (if not more so) than adult transitioners shows this for the bullshit it is, but I think it will still be some time before this stops being swept under the rug and people finally catch on that this is a serious mental health disorder that's not being treated properly.
And like children I think we're gonna see more and more temper tantrums about how it's all the fault of the dirty, horrible cissies that they're not happy and otherwise supportive people are going to start realizing "hey, I did everything the way you said I should and you're still not happy? Fuck off then"

This is an interesting and informative (but also very bleak) article on what the puberty blocker Lupron actually does to s child's developing body. The girls featured in the article are in their 20's and 30's and were given Lupron to delay puberty (for non-trans reasons, obviously) because they had a short predicted adult height and their parents wanted them to grow a few inches taller than they otherwise would have grown. It's awful. These girls have the bone health of a woman in the 65+ age range. Many have had to get things like hip replacements in their 20's.
Lupron is a last resort kind of drug to treat certain types of cancers. And also it costs like $1k a month.
