Maybe they shouldn't have a society so stifling and oppressive that people would literally rather kill themselves or become hikikomori than conform to it.

That sounds like a real novel idea. Not pushing their employees to work 180hr work weeks until they drop dead from overwork, discourage male and female interaction and women getting married or having children to the point where their birthrate has dropped so low they're afraid of dying out over the next century, and also not encouraging people to bully and harass classmates or students for having slightly lighter than 'jet black' hair or being a little too tall would be great ideas, too. It would probably help alleviate their hikkikomori issues.

Tangentially related, but I'm actually a little surprised that the KyoAni fire didn't trigger more of a response from society/the government, given that most of the deaths were caused by their anti-suicide measures (the fire exits on the roof, where most people were working, were locked to prevent people from jumping off the roof and killing themselves).

Any relation to Faisal?

The FGC commentator? Hes a lawyer?

What if I unironically like Voyager. Its what got me into Star Trek.

Sean or Sabat coming forward and preemptively making a deal with Ty would tick all those boxes too. Same thing with RT or even Sony.

The only thing is even Funimation settling would mean a lot inherently. Same with anyone else coming forward. And Funimation settling is actually the most expected of any of the defendants to settle.

One of the key points is that whatever it is involves the defendants in some way because he said they may not be out of the lawsuit just yet.

Could it be a con owner coming forward with TI claims or salacious info?
Could it be one of the affiants recanting and spilling the beans? Didnt one of the twins make a wierd facebook post about the real truth?
Could it be Vic being rehired by RT?

Thought that was South Korea

Yeah but the way you tell it then Funimation settling wouldnt be unexpected or wierd

You're in the clear if you like Voyager. It gets overly criticized for what it was. It definitely didn't live up to what it could have been, but it also wasn't awful. You're on thin ice if you like Enterprise, though.

I suspect it's more in the sphere of audio leaks or Ron's dirty history, except likely related to Marchi. My best guess: Marchi did something like trade sexual favors for some con or studio people to get Vic blocked from those cons in a way that links her back to Funimation and strengthens the conspiracy angle. Alternatively, something might be revealed to indicate that the defense (Marchi in particular) actually has been having some kind of ex-parte discussions with Chupp that may be ruled as prejudicing him.

Even if RT offered to rehire Vic, would he want that job anymore? I suspect he wouldn't.

The great thing about anime dubbing is that you basically never have to see or interact with any other VA. Especially with RT, Vic recorded his lines remotely and didn't even come in to the studio to record them. Conventions would likely be more awkward (panels and signing) than actually working.

But then again, even with live action acting, people have worked on the same show and hated each other. Rumor was that the actress for Cersei Lannister and the actor for Bronn on Game of Thrones hated each other so much that they added clauses in their contract that said not only were they not allowed to be on screen together, they couldn't even have their scenes shot on the same day.

You're missing one key element -- a cultural keystone behind all that shit is that in Japan you do not talk about certain things in public, ever.

So yeah, the roof was locked -- and yes, the roof was locked, I believe their claims that it wasn't locked and everyone just fell down dead 2 seconds before opening the door to safety exactly fucking 0 percent -- and the windows unable to be opened (ditto) to prevent suicide but to admit that would require a shitload of other admissions:

That Japan has a huge problem with suicide
That Japan's reaction to this problem is to just cover it up and pretend it isn't happening rather than suggest maybe their desperate attempts to prop up their economic bubble isn't flying anymore
That said coverup -- preventing people from killing themselves in public -- killed over 30 people
That said company is liable in some way for their employees not being able to escape
That the local government fire code that approved a building with a fucking wooden spiral staircase with no sprinkler system or pressurized stairwells might need to be changed
That there's probably 100,000 other buildings in that city alone that are just as deadly a fire trap but HEY WHAT ARE THE ODDS SOMEONE ELSE WILL TRY THIS IN THE FUTURE

etc etc. It's a combination of wanting to save face, wanting to make sure no one is liable, and not wanting to even touch the subject of mortality.

Hell, what famous anime director died a few years back? He had cancer, and no one talked about it. He didn't tell anyone until he was literally days away from dying, and even then they didn't fucking talk about him dying. Just he wrote an apology letter for missing work and "with my work undone, I sadly lay down my pen at this time." And ... that was it.

There was also the MM author/artist that offed himself, and boy fucking howdy they were so desperate not to say suicide you'd think he was a Zoe Quinn false allegation victim or something.

Oh man I just thought of a big-brained 400-IQ idea

What if one of the randos emailing Nick actually just gives the hangout link or whatever to the bitch boy so he can hop on and screech at Nick? Can you imagine how fun that would be to watch?

That would be a spooky happening for Friday the 13th.

But fucking hilarious.

The good news is whoever loses, we win.

I disagree. Screeching dangerhairs winning a case they deservedly shouldn't is awful. I certainly won't be crying like a little bitch or losing my mind, standing at the edge of a cliff, but I won't be exactly laughing either. Just vaguely disappointed that even after the suit is done and appeals are over the justice system is truly this incapable of handling this issue with common sense and facts, instead of dumb shit like "Yeah there's alotta people here...bangs gavel Limited Purpose Public Figure".

That is true. And ultimately another reason people end up killing themselves or retreating into their room. The culture-wide shunning of speaking about heavy subjects also extends to personal conversations, where you're not allowed to 'bring down' the group. If a person is struggling with something, be it sickness, poverty, or stress induced depression, they're not allowed to discuss it with their friends and often even their family openly, because it's a bummer. They're just told to suppress and ignore it instead, and if they fail to, they become ostracized and ignored by society for making people feel bad.

It's a shame, since you can see anime tries to combat it sometimes, with their shows about bullying, or in particular one anime called 'Orange', where a group of friends completely ignore all the warning signs about someone they know and brush/laugh it off when he talks about killing himself until he suddenly does. (They then apparently are so ruined by the guilt that their sheer combined depression rips a hole in time and lets them send letters to their past selves to not be such callous dicks to their friend)

But...anime is itself considered an undesirable rot on society, so I'm gonna go ahead and postulate it's not doing much for the culture as a whole.

oh, a bit of dark humor about Orange - Vic only did additional voices in it, but Jason Liebrecht voices the guy who steals the girlfriend of his suicidal friend and Monica Rial voices the emotionally abusive mother who also drove him to suicide, so if you think about it....

Think of it this way: we certainly didn't have a boring week with that TCPA hearing. Then again, Lemoine dodged a bullet there as we would have spent this week talking about the dumbsterfire that was his presentation. I mean how embarrassing to call yourself an attorney and bring in a 3rd grade level powerpoint. I'm getting off topic hear. Exceptionalism will be exceptionalism and it's goddamn amazing how this circus ride just surfaces back up.

As for winning or losing the case, I don't think it matters as much as you think it might. Sure, Vic would gain or lose a good chunk of money, but that's not just going to magically make anything better. This lawsuit at least got him to the point of being able to see and interact with fans again even if it nowhere near the height it should have been. The man was breaking down into tears on what would have been his last public showing. That's something so easy to forget in this giant cluster fuck. This lawsuit could not have damaged Vic any more in any way possible beyond finances it was burned down and so broken. But let's take a moment and look at the what if.

What if the case is entirely dismissed and the appeals courts dismiss the case entirely? The odds of this are very, very unlikely, but it's just good for understanding. Vic will still get invited places and he will still have a following for at least the next half decade, but I'm not sure he would be able to grab too many roles right away. Nobody else gets sued. The SJWs celebrate for five minutes before going back to screeching and harassing everyone like before and nothing at all changes in Weeb Wars. Just with Vic out of the picture, more people will say "I'm out" and go back to watching their dubs and Funi struggles to keep subscribers since lord knows how they treat their own. Sabat likely will throw Schemmel to the dogs and he's out of a job in which I honestly think Schemmel will commit suicide if that happens. These people don't care about him and someone has to be the sacrifice to keep Funi afloat. Huber and Todd are gone as well because they can't risk another controversy.

And RT likely will make cuts to the point they drop the animation studio in its entirety because it is costing way too much for the profit it produces. Once RWBY becomes a profit loss, there will be no more animations from them. That branch lives and dies by that series. So sad Nomad of Nowhere is gone because that's the one thing I really, really liked from them. ANN and all those other people will grow tired of Vic and talk about something else as he stops being the spotlight and doesn't garner enough attention. Someone else will be thrown in front and we deal with this shit all over again.

And guess what? The same results will happen if Vic wins the lawsuit. Sorry, but the way this has gone its ending is doomed to be the same. The only way this ends with a good ending is if the entirety of the industry does a 180 and cleans up its act. Lower the amount of toxicity, have people grow some goddamn spines and own their business, and shove the toxic snakes into the corners to die out letting the good people of the community thrive and set a better standard. It's an unrealistic ending. One I'm sure thousands dream will happen, but those that stand in that way would rather die than go that route.
