That is exactly what it's like. Gonna power level here a bit as an experience, I got to talk with one of the artists that for a long while avoided cons for some times after their first one ages ago, it was only 2 years back that they came to a con and they don't go to many. They mostly avoid cons cause they did express that furries are insufferable, clingy, and too cringey to bother putting up with, enough that they get a stalkerish vibe.
Artists now go to cons more often because it's become a lot more profitable for them over the years, yet they still have to put up with certain conventions making it hell to get table registrations to not make it worth going out to. There isn't ever a con that has it's disaster children running rampant to fuck shit up cause they don't know how to act at a public or social level and it's doubly worse when another group buys out a spot at convention centers and the furcon is running at the same time, dumb shit is always happening behind or on scene.

Personally I attend conventions to meet up with a shit ton of friends and hang out in person a couple times a year. I don't do room parties or anything like that but I find the dealers den to be fun and to meet up with people. It's not all bad, stay away from the room parties and you're good.

I, too, remember the Great Volleyballer Campout of 2012. And then the way some shit-stirrer got furry Twitter famous the next year.
Good times. FC was pretty great back in the day. Too bad the con chair and all his friends (and wife) poisoned the well.

In order to advance in communist society you must toe the party line at all times. There's no real merit involved (which is how Lysenkoism happened.) Furries are really fucking extraordinarily good at this.
The furry fandom is not a fetish and, uh...we must unite the labor glory and purge the counterrevolutionary elements comrades.

It's actually kind of weird if you consider conventions outside the fandom. They're excuses to both celebrate a theme or idea while also meeting up with others. It's like having a perma-pinned day in your calendar every year, but so does all your friends. I'm sure there's orgies at EVO and Blizzcon as well, but at least they have a topic. You go there to hear about a new WoW expansion before getting drugged and raped in a hotel room.
I've honestly only heard of furcons from friends who act like it's a party. You settle down, go eat, then drink and have fun 2 hours later when everyone else is wasted and people are tumbling around. Then they sober up for 10 minutes and manage to put it in someone before forgetting about it and doing it again the next day. The panels always sound like a bad joke meant to torture people who don't have friends or room-party plans. Such classics as "How to figure out if your relationship is toxic" or "How to make a second life avatar".
The faster someone starts up a con and brands it like a party with proper hospitality facilities, such as hygiene and not letting drunk assholes in puppy gear waddle around, the better. Relationships are the foundation of the fandom and there's nothing else to celebrate it. Art den? You mean fostering relations and paying people to draw your doggydick? Whether it's RP, fake comfort or art, you're always interacting through trade; it's just what the fandom is. Then again I guess that's what they do; they assume everyone understands that fandom = flirting and fucking, so by celebrating it you're just partaking in a lowkey orgy.
Which is fine. It's just despicable that we not only have to fear tranny groomers, but also furry groomers now. At least some decent people straight up block minors.

You can always tell the lifestory of a furry from their gallery. A sudden surge in art and subsequent raise in quality followed by uninspired milling out of art as they fail to realize why it's not as exciting buying the 38th drawing.
I witnessed 3 incredibly well-adjusted American white males with all the benefits in the world turn down work and cross-state moving because it'd mess up their furry events and one of them also went broke on a suit. No one can handle money in that fandom, despite you could get by with a $30 drawing for social media icons.
