Honestly I still feel like Reylo becoming canon would cause more salt than it not being canon due to the fact that the antis overall are significantly more batshit than Reylos. Reylos can be annoying, spergy, and extra, but ones who do shit like send death threats and call people racial slurs and accuse them of all kinds of crazy ass shit are pretty rare. Meanwhile that's pretty standard behavior for the antis, who also think doing so makes them righteous crusaders for social justice instead of a lunatic threatening to murder people because they wanna see some star Wars characters bang.

I dont know what was the FIRST big one but i believe the term got popular around 2014~ thanks to Supernatural and Sherlock fandoms fucking exploding because their ships got deconfirmed. That was when yaoi fangirls realized they could to mask their fetish under the guise of wanting gay representation, and used that as tool to pretend they are entitled to having their yaoi ship become canon.

While the term queerbaiting hadn't been coined at the time, the yaoi shippers in the Gundam Wing fandom were pretty bad, especially the Heero/Duo shippers. They mostly handled their ship not being canon by insisting it totally was in the original Japanese version and just got edited out by the evil homophobic Americans (even though that's not even remotely true and Gundam dubs tend to be pretty faithful to the original scripts), as well as having this psychotic hatred of Relena and bullying Relena fans and Heero/Relena shippers. Hell, they even went after anyone who simply didn't have yaoi on their geoshitties site (like people who ran general fansites), accusing them of homophobia and other crazy shit.

The Gundam Wing fandom was basically the Voltron fandom of the day.

I hear Sasuke/Naruto shippers also are pretty bad, as well as slash shippers in the FMA and other anime fandoms that have been big over the years.

Seriously, there was even a whole "Johnlock conspiracy" about it.
