EDIT: @klystron : I live in a mental health recovery facility & unfortunately have to rely on taxpayer money to survive. Not because I'm lazy or refuse to work, but because of frequent psychotic breaks that kind of interfere with. . .everything. I actually do menial work at the aforementioned facility to pay some of my bills, & soon I'm going to be traveling to other hospitals to offer support to teenage girls who've spent a good portion of their lives in the mental health system. I also worked & went to school & paid rent & taxes before I went completely batshit.
TL;DR, life has a funny way of knocking you down & taking a baseball bat to your head sometimes. You never know when you're gonna need help getting back on your feet.

EDIT x2 COMBO: Point is that I can see how welfare, etc. can be a sore subject for some, a la @Chuggernaut . I have a bad habit of jumping down people's throats about that stuff, too.

While I do feel the systems are often abused and taken advantage of (which only hurts those who really need it) that was not the point of my original comment. It is too easy for people to think the government should do X or Y when we survived as a society long before the government did said things. Why wouldn't the first thought of @Cowlick's predicament be family, a church, or some charity? Why do people always assume the govt will/should do everything? Multiply that line of thinking by millions of people and millions of votes and we are all bankrupt. I just always see comments like "well the govt should take care of this or that" and can't help but think something smaller, more efficient, and with actual accountability might be better suited.

I really do wish you recovery and the ability to repay society for the money you seem to feel bad about receiving. Remember that no matter how bad things get, at least you aren't @Cowlick.

It's a shame so many people think the government is supposed to take care of us.

Yeah, they should just have carte blanche to tell us what to do and command armed forces and serve society nothing in return.

Kind of like how TJChurch thinks he can keep responding to people without actually reading anything they write thoroughly.
