Judging by the figure, it's for the two-toned ears to make "sense". The fringe fades into one ear while the back/rest of the head is the same color as the "normal" fur. So it's a color-balance thing. Which wouldn't be a terrible idea if everything in the comic wasn't magenta-flavored.
