It would certainly explain why he's so eager to play down the amount of training that suicide hotlines give their volunteers--TLL is known to barely give any (2 hours or something preposterous like that if I remember correctly). As for playing down the usefulness of a therapist's training--well, it doesn't lead to his therapist telling them that he's always right and then giving him a magic pill to fix his life, so how great could it possibly be?

I guess because being a sloth and laying in bed all day are some of the few daily routines Jake is familiar with. One of the most destructive concepts of recent years has to be "self care," because it means that lazy NEETS have an excuse for being their sloth. It's not being lazy any more, it's "taking time for myself," with the implication that the person spends so much time working and worrying about others that they're in danger of burning out. Jake is a case in point. "Blow off work," as if he ever does any actual work.
