Just my guess, he didn't pay his bill and lost possesson of his number. The new owner of his number received messages from someone who thought Toren was still in control of that number (maybe gRoss trany sexting...tim?!). New owner told them that he was TransEthics or whatever and the person trying to text/call Toren emailed them and said that someone new had their number. Toren then sees the chance to grift.

This is the two-edged sword of the Internet. On the one hand, it means that any talented and hard-working creator can publish their work and get noticed. On the other, it means that a workshy loser like Toren can produce zero-effort, zero-research shit, get it published on a vanity site and pretend that qualifies him for the same profession as Hunter S. Thompson, George Orwell and Ernest Hemingway.

I mean, this isn't a man who's going to go into a warzone or go undercover with dangerous criminals. This isn't even a man with an academic degree (that he can prove exists). He's not even worked his way up through the profession old-skool style. He's a man who sits on his arse and just writes variants of "being trans is great" a couple of times a year. He's not a journalist, he's a serial autobiographer.

Yes, this is exactly the advice Toren should follow. Encourage him to drink less water, consume more salt. That should fix him right up because surely his continual back pain, jaundiced skin and nausea are not related to chronic pancreatitis caused from drinking vodka straight from the plastic jug in the parking lot of the package store. Just in the same way that his yellow skin and frequent nose bleeds are in no way related to alcoholic cirrhosis. Yep, all he needs to do is stop drinking so damn much water and eat as much greasy old salty pizza as he can get his hands on and he'll be fine.
