i’m glad i stopped reading homestuck a year ago

lurking on this thread makes me hate it even more lol

Kind of a shame. I though Act 1 was pretty meh but I really enjoyed the music, and I felt if they maintained the few non-hacks left at the studio then maybe part 2 could be pretty alright, but with the shitshow that was left over there it wasn't happening. Viz buying didn't really seal the nail in the coffin for me as much as them releasing even more tumblr-ish tripe would have. Better it doesn't get made at all tbh.

Fans of Problem Sleuth are gonna be sad now. I don't understand what Viz can do with this IP, like it's been said, the hype train is long over. It's nigh inaccessible, stacks of in-jokes upon in-jokes only the cult of a fandom would understand. And it's really fucking long. I always suspected that, when people try to get their friends to read Homestuck, really they want them to join the 'cult' so they can laugh at all the faygo and memes and then cosplay together, never because Homestuck is a genuine good piece of fiction.

The comic gets more and more dated as time passes. How many fans were old enough to appreciate that it's one big point-and-click adventure like a Sierra game, inputting things in a shitty eye-burning DOS prompt? I don't know how Viz would retool it besides gutting it utterly and making all the humour circa-2010 for the gen z'ers. Like, go trickster mode by eating a red/green tide pod or something.

Eh. Even it's heyday the fanbase was mostly too young to remember or appreciate those aspects of the story, I don't really think it's important to the popularity of the comic. It also was really fucking long when lots of people got into it, so I don't even think that is necessarily a barrier either. Dissecting Homestuck's popularity is complicated, but a big part of it was the large and dedicated fanbase that produced a lot of fanwork. This would be difficult if not impossible to revive, especially with a company running the show. Hussie and the comic itself interacting with the fanbase was a big piece of the puzzle.

Apparently Viz is trying to get into video games or something, so if I had to guess I would say that they're banking on people wanting to read Homestuck after playing Hiveswap so they want to make it somewhat more accessible. Can't say I think its particularly wise.

Hussie posted a ton of content on a regular basis when Problem Sleuth and Homestuck were actively running. The frenetic pacing kept fans involved and active. The fandom disintegrated when there was no longer a steady update schedule during the long pauses, and Hussie didn't really do anything to keep fans engaged during long content droughts.

It's been less than a week since Hiveswap's team got fired, and Hussie's already setting up shop again as if he never left. Right now he's planning on peddling a Hiveswap dating sim for about 99 cents on Steam; he's calling it Hiveswap: Friendsim. Now, given the present situation where almost no one from the team is left, you might be asking: who the fuck did they hire to replace everyone? That's a pretty simple answer: almost no one.

Hussie's re-using assets from Shelby Cragg and her wife, Amber, for this one, along with employing a new coder, David "traceExcalibur" Turnbull, but the writing itself is all his. I'm really not sure how I feel at all about this, since it's the kind of shit Hussie used to put in Homestuck for free.

For those of you who still feel like giving him money, the whole WP store is shutting down and having a 50% off sale. Too bad the shipping is hella expensive, and it's all probably going to Hussie's bank account.

You know, I followed Homestuck quite a lot back in the day. I'm honestly glad to see that Hussie's kind of taking matters into his own hands for once now, and recognising how shitty his previous crew was.
Hopefully this means a new era for the comic. And with that dating sim supposedly being written by Hussie too, I think it's fair to say that he's trying to get back in the groove after having a ghostwriter for so long.

*rates self :optimistic:*

If there was a Hopeful rating as opposed to an Optimistic one, I'd use it here. I hope he comes back into the fold and reverses as much of the damage his old team did as possible. We can only dream at this point, though, as it looks like he's the source of his own problems here.

I didn't even know that the What Pumpkin store still existed? Didn't they shut that down ages ago and move all their merch over to WLF/By Fans for Fans? A few years ago they had a big sale like this one where they unloaded all their stock.

I'm surprised too. You'd think most people would get merch from WLF or Topataco by now.

It feels more like Hussie is beating his cash cow to death rather than getting back in the groove
If he wants to make something good he should scrap the dumpster fire that is Homestuck altogether and move the fuck on already

Man, i haven't looked at anything Homestuck related since it was popular at the time. I remember reading it nonstop on the website and the fact that now Viz took the IP is news to me. I don't know why Viz is so late taking the Homestuck IP because Homestuck's popularity is dead at the moment. Viz would have to pull something AMAZING under their asses, and possibly Hussie, if they wanna attract a new crowd and the old crowd again.

Only thing Homestuck related that i have heard about as of late is that Hiveswap sucks major ass. Wasn't it supposed to be 3D and they changed it to 2D for some odd reason or something?

Mostly just because a.) they needed more money, b.) their management was shitty, and c.) they were likely too inexperienced to work on a 3D title.

If you feel you don't understand what's happening now, or missed the details on why they changed to 2D, READ THE THREAD. I cannot stress that enough.

Okay, but since Viz owns Homestuck, does that mean Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff is officially a manga?

yes

Speaking of whatpumkin

Pretty much all of the homestuck merchs are on welovefine (now its called forfansbyfans) right?

Does Andrew get money from them when people buy homestuck stuff?

I also heard the company has a bad rep when it comes to shipping and the "artist program" where people can draw a pic for a fandom contest and if its popular enough, it becomes an actual design and the artist gets a "commission". But I've heard it doesnt really work like that.

Anyone have any info about it?

I honestly didn't expect Hussie to provide any more content himself. I got the impression he wanted to put Homestuck far, far behind him. *rates self :pessimistic:*

I thought so too, especially with him selling off the IP completely. Maybe he's poor and decided (once again) that his dignity isn't worth the payout?

Edit: I vaguely recall him specifically mentioning that he wanted to move onto other things, but take that for a grain of salt because I don't have anything to back it up.
