The laws aren't flimsy, enforcement is. Straw purchases are way illegal yet all the gangbangers with felony records have shiny new pistols and rifles bought by their girlfriends. The BATF only prosecutes like 3 cases a year for that. It's ridiculous.

But then we have cases like Jared Lee Loughner who were squeaky clean. There was nothing on their records to flag them. I am guessing that's the case with this kid too.

What laws do you think would help in a case like that? Full mental screens? That's going to piss people off bigtime because every person who went through a bought of depression after a divorce is going to get flagged. Same with veterans with PTSD ratings. People who have had strokes. Etc. And even then people like the Vegas shooter would slip through.

There isn't a sure-fire law that can be implemented to stop these things. Spree shooters are by their nature difficult to stop with laws and regulations.
The kid had a history of violence against animals and threats. Background checks need to have things like that included.

Oh no, law abiding citizens will be slightly more inconvenienced by ensuring people with scary histories can't legally buy guns. How awful.

Straight up, there is no getting through to people who have issues with this. A friend of a friend is a gun nut, and he whines that "reeee i have to wait THREE WHOLE DAYYYYYS to get a gun if they do thourough background checks!" Like God forbid he has to wait to get a weapon that has the potential to kill someone with a pull of the trigger.

These people feel as though they're being persecuted because other people don't want crazies getting guns.

God bless America.

Killed two, including himself.

Pretty sure crimes a person have been found guilty for are included in background checks.

Kinda sucks for the huge population of poor people that had to plead guilty because they had no money though...

i think this is all something we can get behind. that and better mental health services because even though that person can't kill people with guns, he's still deeply troubled and needs help

The US was founded with the expectation that there would, at the very least, be occasional skirmishes between states. At worst, national revolutions. Not only are straw purchases and underground purchases easy enough to make stringent background checks useless in the first place, but the 2nd amendment is in place specifically, literally in place to allow individuals to arm themselves to the greatest extent they can manage to prevent a police state. Not that it worked, considering people are so startled by guns that they'd rather push for Americans to forfeit their liberties instead of emigrating and leaving it be.

The issue with gun violence is a symptom of cultural rot: Unfortunately, parents on both sides of the political spectrum never want to acknowledge that they might just be shitty parents (or grandparents acknowledging that raising their kids full individualism mode spawns a fuckload of unstable desocialized individuals that become more radicalized in time) and that our school system needs to be rebuilt from the ground up + our mental health stigma needs to be eradicated etc. They'd rather blame it on guns, as if students wouldn't go on knifing sprees or construct bombs if they couldn't get a gun easily enough (even though in reality, all the gun control in the world in a place like the US with two huge borders and established gun presence) will only hinder law abiding citizens at best.

For example, speaking with a friend from South Africa, they have gun restrictions that GC advocates here in the US would be all for. Competency test, background check, inspection of the household, up to gov't discretion who gets licensed, etc.

And South Africa still has nearly the same amount of gun deaths per capita as the US (but only 1/7 as many recognized guns per capita as per a 2012 article). Why? Because thugs in SA didn't give two shits about the regulation and it's easy enough to get guns smuggled in/that were already there.

Making guns more difficult to obtain will have short term benefits in dampening occurrences, but the most grievous offenses using guns won't disappear because you grouped together and were mad enough to say "no more guns!" They'll continue regardless, or they'll become worse because people will start using bombs/chemicals more commonly.

It's interesting watching the whole "mental illness" conversation play out. We are very, very close to entirely giving up the language needed to even express any sort of actual moral framework. Everything is just reduced to chemicals.

Then we hand-wring when the kids up and decide that nothing is real and nothing matters.

I'm going to throw out a crazy idea. What if the US invested in a public healthcare option and gave it enough funding to take care of the mentally ill so that they wouldn't be left untreated? I mean, it's either that or we just euthanize anyone from a violence prone background: incels, the mentally ill, people that post pictures of themselves with their guns on instagram, and edgy teenagers with a fear of large furniture.

No, that's dumb. You're dumb. Mental illness isn't real and public healthcare means SOCIALISM and I DON'T LIKE THAT KIND OF THING REEEEEEEEEE.

so yeah kill all the crazies and incels. with guns. which we have far too many of.

America fuck yeah.

The Nikolas de Jesus Cruz who registered as a Democratic voter isn't the same guy as the school shooter, and that kid is a ginger who was adopted by Hispanics. Whining about stickers and calling people cucks doesn't make you right when you have several facts blatantly wrong.

Also, if you're really going to claim he was part of Antifa based on him wearing one shirt, then you'll have to accept people claiming this is all Trump's fault because he wore MAGA hats too.

I want a penis rating now. Like a really crudely drawn penis. For baiting posts.

The majority of mass shooters do not have an untreated mental illness. Dudes that beat their wives and kids are not mentally ill more often than anyone else. The majority of mentally ill people are not violent. It's laughable when you survey the population of MI people, they are almost exclusively fucking themselves up. People who choose to be violent often use mental illness as an excuse. Violence is chosen for reasons that have to do with the beliefs and values combined with life circumstances. So they start out with a twisted belief system about when violence is justified, and run into a situation that they perceive as being detrimental to their dignity if they don't use violence. Violent people feel entitled to be violent, and see it as winning. Gavin DeBecker is a violence prediction and security expert, and wrote the book The Gift of Fear. He has a lot of concrete suggestions to reduce mass shootings, like not putting the name and picture of the killer all over the news, focusing on victims almost exclusively in coverage, make the context of media coverage humiliating for shooters . The media does the opposite, and losers think there is prestige in being famous for killing. To normal people it doesn't seem like a good thing, but if you look at it like a future killer it seems amazing. I can't remember the other suggestions in the book, but it isn't like its impossible to change a cultural narrative. That's what is needed most of all.

What the left doesn't see is that they can't wish away all guns and gun ban is just not possible.

-It would make gun nuts revolt. The guys with the home arsenals you know.
-It would not stop the black market, which is sizable in the US. US is not Switzerland.
-It would make an invasion like it is in Europe non preventable. I wish now we had a second amendment.

I used to laugh at US gun policy, but in the end it turned out to be fucking wise. I was wrong, and their founding fathers were right, and I admit it.

Now putting the loons in the asylum would help.

South Africa doesn't care about gun violence unless it's white on black self-defense. It gives them an excuse not for "stricter" gun control laws, but to steal more farmland from whitey.

Comparing the U.S. to South Africa is like apples to oranges. Just look at France and the 2015 Paris attacks. The terrorists who could have been kept out of the country had guns, regardless of a ban they don't care about.
