Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

What frustrates me about the sequels is that it feels like everything from the original trilogy has been invalidated. Nothing they achieved really meant anything. Han and Leia broke up, their kid is a mess, Luke is a bitter old failure who's living as a hermit, the New Republic didn't last and went right back into being a rebellion against another set of bad guys with a black-cloaked Force-using villain ... Everything the characters worked for was taken away, and they're left back at square one except they're older, weaker, and (increasingly) more dead.

That might work in a different series, but the initial Star Wars was actually pretty optimistic. It was a classic fantasy adventure in a sci-fi setting. This, not so much.

I dunno, maybe I'm oversimplifying. But while the EU turned into a complete mess, it managed to (at least initially) lay the groundwork for new adventures with a similar tone to the original films. In the EU, the New Republic was established but struggling for legitimacy, leaving room for both war and political intrigue. The characters had survived the war but were struggling to adapt to their new roles--Luke working to figure out how to resurrect the Jedi without repeating the mistakes of the past, Leia having more and more responsibilities piled on her as one of the high authorities in the New Republic, Han struggling with living on the right side of the law and being a level-headed, semi-educated, former career criminal surrounded by a bunch of political types. The characters were permitted to evolve and build on previous accomplishments.

You couldn't do exactly that with the new films, of course, not with the time that's passed, but you don't need to hit the cosmic reset button. Why go back to the Rebellion?

TL;DR: I'm not mad, TLJ. Just disappointed.

Eh, didn't the EU essentially do that with the post New Jedi Order shit? Admittedly, Luke and co managed to go out with some dignity, but the same old shit broke out and their legacies get shit on and everything they did was for nought.
 
It really just feels like the critics and websites who hyped this movie up want to defend their praise, but it feels like they are more in love with the idea of this movie rather than the movie itself.

Like the people who say this movie is about toxic masculinity and embracing feminism. People have called out Holdo for not including her men in her plans, leading to the mutiny as well as the zany scheme. Then after she sacrifices herself Rose, fucking Rose, prevents Finn from sacrificing himself for the rebellion while admonishing such actions (Then Luke sacrificed himself). They leave out Rose's part in the plan that ultimately fucked everyone over, as well as the fact they brought back the Shiny Stormtrooper without explanation only to chuck her back into the fridge. And Rey only managed to get the resistance out of the shaft because Luke bought her time, never mind that it was Kylo freaking Ren that offed Snoke while Rey was powerless to do anything. Or you have how we should let the past go and move towards the future, but that's bunk. Rey has the freaking Jedi texts and Luke alludes to her being the Last Jedi, Luke is the one who saves the day in the end and his whole arc is him being the inspirational legend people think he is. Those kids at the end aren't playing with a doll called Rey or Finn, they're talking about how awesome Luke is. And the resistance is still using the rebellion's logo as well as the reused stuff from the original trilogy.

This movie is a fucking mess and they're stuck in a very bad position for praising it so heavily. They're looking for every excuse they can to delegitimatize anyone who says otherwise.

Dropping bombs in microgravity? How does this even work? Like, it made sense with Y-Wings because those shoot, like, energy balls. But these are solid bombs! They should drift unless they're propelled.
 
It's funny how theres so many clickbait articles claiming that they only people who hate the movie are racist alt-right channer Trumper literal Hilters when the people I've seen complaining about it are complaining about stuff that has nothing to do with any of the characters race or gender, or are SJWs who are assmad that Finn and Poe didn't fuck and that Kylo exists.

BTW as autistic as some of the SW fanboys crying have been, at least I haven't seen them sending the cast and crew death wishes like the SJWs.

I wish I could remember where I read it, but apparently they had some sort of homing devices implemented that told them where to go. Microchips, you know, smart bombs. Mike also says something about it in the HitB review.
 
One thing I'm wondering about right now is how this film is going to do in the Chinese market. China is an important market for Hollywood, but one thing I've constantly heard is they don't care as much for dark stories. It's usually something attributed to movies like Batman V. Superman doing absolutely awful in that market with it's sales sharply dropping in it's second week, or Gundam IBO being supposed reviled by the Chinese Gundam community. In addition, they have their own social values which lead to Disney removing Finn from the poster for The Force Awakens.
 
Star Wars is an american thing. A blockbuster usually does 30%~40% domestically and everything else overseas, in the case of Star Wars this ratio is 50% for each side. China won't help a lot, even with a local star Rogue One was weak. And they like only special effects, this movie is incredibly long and boring for the most part.
 
The worst thing they ever did with Episode VII was bring back the old actors. It's still bogging down these movies, and it will fuck up IX even more because now they have a dead Carrie Fisher on their hands.

Not to mention that they’ll probably have to kill her off in the new one, making it three for three in the “Lets Kill Off One of the Three Original Stars” trilogy.
 
I saw the movie. What a disgrace. I can't talk to anyone about it because they don't care or are big Star Wars fans who will defend the most inane shit this movie threw at them, so I'll share my thoughts here.

I did enjoy some space battles. Those were done well enough. My praise for the movie ends here.

It feels as if they don't want to take risks by making a movie with all the Star Wars stuff (Characters we're familiar with, the exact same spaceships that in the original movies but with slight differences, a white, barren planet with AT-AT and a rebel base, cute little comedic relief creature things,...) but at the same time try to pull off insane shit like weaponized hyperspace or Leia ragdolling through the crushing void of space with Force powers, breaking the internal logic of the universe. I mean now we know that you can destroy things with hyperspace, why didn't they use it on the Death Star? Imagine all the things you can do with this... You get my point.

The movie felt like a parody of Star Wars. I watched it with a friend, most of the jokes presented within TLJ didn't work but we were constantly laughing at random shit, there's so many of these unintentionally funny moments scattered through the movie. See Leia going through space, or 4 shot reverse shots in 2 second whenever dialog happens (????), or Rei or Luke constantly climbing rocks with their elbows, and so much more.

Speaking of Luke, oh god, what have they done to him. How in the FUCK would Luke even CONSIDER drawing his lightsaber at his nephew? Luke, who was ready to sacrifice himself to save the little humanity left in Vader in that other movie? I understand seeing Hamill so disappointed in the movie, now. They killed his character in post production, without telling him, I think.
Why is Rey so perfect at everything she does? She kicked everyone's ass, now the fucking Empire or First order or whatever doesn't feel threatening at all, she can just swoop in and Force-emasculate Kylo Ren and all of his knight everyone forgot about because she's that fucking strong and learned to master her powers in an afternoon, she can talk to the robots and to r2, pilot the falcon, shoot from the falcon, everyone likes her,... This character is so incredibly boring. Is that because Kathleen Kennedy's feminist agenda is seeping through the movie? Do we need to go there?
Not as boring as the romance between the only likable character (Finn) and that random chick who went on the casino planet to talk shit about capitalism or something, though. Did they forget they're in a movie made by Disney??

Why didn't they do anything with the stuff they set up in the first movie? You know, Luke's lightsaber, Snoke, the chrome stormtrooper bitch, Reis parents,.. Oh right, they changed directors. That's what they did.
Why did Yoda come to fucking SMITE the Jedi tree? Did he know Rei actually stole the texts?
How did the Empire come back in power after 30 years? How did the Rebels lose everything? It undermines all the shit accomplished in the previous movies.
Why didn't the hunger games lady didn't tell anyone her plan?
Why would Luke be all "GTFO MY ISLAND I JUST WANT TO DIE CUNT" when HE left a map specifically made for when someone who is force sensitive and on the right side of the Force would want to find him?
Why is Daisy Ridley's performance so incredibly bad?
Why is Rian Johnson allowed to write movies?
Why.. How are the fans eating that shit up? If I were a huge Star Wars fan I'd feel insulted by the quality of this fucking excuse of a movie.

I won't watch another Star Wars. Those aren't movies, they're products, bad products, made to appeal to the widest audience possible. There's a reason Kennedy is firing the people in charge of Star Wars IX and the Han Solo movie because of "Creative differences":she needs to tick all the boxes required by Disney to make an appealing product for as many people as possible. Vision? Creative integrity? Quality? Fuck these things. People will eat that shit up just because it's Star Wars if it looks half competent.

I wish the series ended with episode VI.
