Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

I saw it tonight. It was pretty okay. It's not the clusterfuck everyone autistically hyped it to be. It had some good things and it had some lame things. But overall, not terrible. The visuals and cinematography were nice.

Just saw it.

The Jedi training bits and the Light/Dark conflict themes were ace, and The First Order is still pretty rad. However outside of that the film was fucking shocking.

Fuck the dumbarse Rebellion, fuck the Porgs, more Hux and Kylo being catty please, and it's nice to see Adrian Edmondson in a Hollywood film.

I will also add that although it's good to see Rey actually get some character, it shouldn't be at the expense of Finn.

4/10 fuck the Leia spacewalk.

Can we expect a Twitter and Tumblr meltdown for referring to Carrie Fisher as a princess instead of a general?

Huh that seems like a pretty inflammatory title, but I'm sure I can trust Angela Watercutter, she is a trustworthy author!

Tumblr is apparently in full meltdown mode between the very slight Reylo ship teasing and it not ending in Finn and Poe banging. Some has been posted in the shipping thread in Community Watch. Highlights include the director being called a Nazi, crying about how Star Wars apparently hates pee o' cees and gays, and some chick threatening to kill Adam Driver because Kylo exists.

So was the article above your post about these people?

Did you ever hear the tragedy of George Lucas The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Mouse would tell you. It’s a Hollywood legend. George Lucas was a Dark Lord of the Film, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to create movies… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the franchise he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he sold Star Wars to white slavers for money.

Are people salty that the proud POC rebels got their shit pushed in by the based First Order?

The coolest part of the movie was Finn and that token Asian chick at the gambling planet and meeting Benicio del Toro. His character was the most interesting in the whole movie. The scene with kids in the stable where they kept the Last Guardian race horses was stupid and manipulative though. I don't know why we needed a scene where mean ol' alien guy threatens them with his space whip. Especially in the same movie with literal living plush dolls so the kiddies in the theaters will have yet another toy to add to their wishlists.

Gwendoline Christine was wasted -again. You did get to see her eyeball this time at least. I have a feeling she's going to be in the third movie despite falling into a fireball. The character has amounted to nothing other than to give Finn someone to fight mano e mano. Expect her and Finn to have another duel. Maybe they'll thumb wrestle or play twister next time just to make it more interesting. At least she still has Tormund.

I did like the attempt to make the Force a more nebulous and morally neutral concept. No more spergy bullshit about falling to the dark side or being call to the light. It's about the ebb and flow of life that we all experience, the decisions we make and living with those decisions. Kylo Ren, after being hurt and manipulated by those he trusted, is now a nihilist believing only in his power to destroy and eradicate. Rey, despite being a castoff child of galactic white trash, embraces hope and a belief not only in herself, but the ones she loves. Too bad the fanboys will only worry about how she's going to get a new light saber.

Why does Laura Dern look like a 1920's dowager? Why did we need to see Leia survive being blasted out into space? Why is it the african-american BB-8 has to be the bad one?

wow, I honestly didn't think the movie would be so splitting between folks. /tv/ is having a meltdown right now, but at least Luke drinking m.ilk will become a new meme for them.
I liked it, more than TFA. It probably helps that I can't stand old Harrison Ford anymore so killing him off was the best thing the last movie did.

Luke reminded me of the version of Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond - a grumpy old man burdened by his past regrets and needing the advice of someone young to find meaning again. I guess I can see why Mark wasn't too pleased by that, but I really enjoyed his portrayal. I'm also suprised by the intense butthurt regarding his death. He died on his own terms, not in a battle and with a new hope (heh). Maybe it's because as much as I liked young Luke, he wasn't a particularly deep character and getting upset by his character being "butchered" seems weird to me. Dunno.

I'm also glad the whole "Jedi island" thing wasn't a focus point, I despised George wanting to explain everything (especially the Force) in the most boring way possible. This is a fantasy movie, as long as nothing too r.etarded happens, you can handwave it away.

Suprisingly enough, the Kylo and Rey scenes were the highlights of the movie for me. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the relationship they have, but those parts were nice.

Visually it looked amazing, but nowadays that isn't too hard to achieve. That said, many high budget movies still manage to fuck it up.

Glad Poe and Finn had much more to do this time around. Poe's hot headness and learning how to be a leader and when to back down wasn't anything new, but it was presented simply and worked. I was kind of worried at the start that the new girl, Rose, would be a spergy klutz (think Tilly from STD), but she was very active and actually did things. Also glad the movie took time to have Rose and Finn grow close together, but not have them instantly fall in love. Their casino planet sideplot made me roll my eyes a bit, but it was fine.

Now, Rey was good in the scenes with Kylo, but I do feel there's still something missing with her character. I can't quite pinpoint it down and I'm too tired to think about it now (those 3D glasses are a pain in my ass, they make my head hurt the rest of the day), but I wonder if she needs to be just a bit more of a fuck-up. I am so grateful they made her parents nobodies, I so feared they'd pull some bullshit like "oh yeah Obi-Wan/Snoke/Sheev is your dad". I do agree that it would've explained why she's pretty OP in fights without any Jedi training, but eh. Maybe they'll talk about this more in the next one, who knows. It's not a part I really care about much.

Phasma was so fucking pointless, lmao. I get the feeling they just threw her character into the story (meaning back when they were casting TFA) so people would stop reeing about BUT WHERE ARE THE WOMEN ???, but then didn't know what to do with her. And I know WHY they had the porgs, but I did expect them to do something of relevance to the plot. Those ice/crystal foxes had more relevance to the story than them and they weren't being shilled to death by Disney.

I am suprised they didn't kill of Leia. There were like 3 times in the story I expected it to happen, but she ends up surviving. I guess they had enough scenes of Carrie to tie up Leia's story in the 9th movie.

One thing I appreciated was the fairly tight setting that mostly focused on the resistance losing ships and trying to survive the First Order's onslaught. It felt more intimate. The timeline of the movie is a bit scketchy though and leaves the impression everything takes place in ~a day.

Don't know how I feel about Snoke's death. I'm torn on it being a good choice since it allowed a mentally unstable Kylo to take over and possibly alienate his own followers, but it also feels like a waste of character. I'm not asking them to give his life story, but maybe give hints on WHY he was so feared and powerful (beside the obvious).
There's a lot more to talk about, but my main impressions of the film. I'm glad it wasn't ESB 2.0, even when watching TFA I realised quickly it was VERY much like ANH. I'll have to sit on it a bit and maybe change my mind on some things, but right now I enjoyed it.

I think Mark was more annoyed at going from a guy who was willing to suffer in order to redeem his father from the dark side to a nut who tries to kill his nephew in his sleep.

Everything from this movie feels incredibly disjointed with TFA, likely because they didn't write anything past TFA and just threw this shit together in less than a year. I wasn't a fan of all the nostalgia pandering in the last film, but I'm also not a fan of shit just saying "Fuck it" to everything introduced and just doing your own thing, because then why should I even bother to care about these characters, or this setting? We're two thirds through this trilogy and I have no idea what the point of anything happening is. If its just going to be drama of redeeming Kylo Ren from the dark side, yeesh, what a waste of time.

I actually kinda want Kylo to not end as being a completely evil monster for Rey to saber in episode 9. He doesn't have to be redeemed per se, but some people have suggested the idea of him getting pulled from being completely dark but not light either and him just ending as a neutrally alligned space rogue. He's a ridiculous emo pissbaby but I do find him oddly endearing for it and want something not completely horrible to happen to him.

Plus it would make the SJWs loose their shit even more than they already are, they hate Kylo for being a white dude, and the idea of him being not 100% evil makes them extremely salty.

Also the Knights of Ren are still space Deagle Nation until proven otherwise (with Kylo as their Jace).

Ah, that part about Mark makes sense. My argument is the movie did say he tried until the very last moment to save Ben, but it was desperation (followed by instant regret) that drove him to try to kill him. The feeling I got was Luke growing a bit too comfortable with his own legacy, which made him overconfident and blind to other options. Vader being who he was wasn't his fault so saving him was easier, but in Luke's opinion, he himself had in created Kylo Ren in his sister's child (or at least had not been able to stop his turn) and that drove him to desperation. It was extremely cowardly and foolish, sure, but Luke realised it right away and was ashamed. Maybe if Ben hadn't woken up he might've had a chance to save him in a similar manner to Vader, but Ben did wake up, saw something that Snoke had probably (imo) implied would happen (your uncle will turn on you, he will try to stop you or something like that) and there was no turning back then.

Regarding your second point, I agree the movies feel very different, especially in the way TLJ approached what happened in the last movie. But I'm okay with that. TFA did a lot of things I disliked and I'm more than fine with TLJ keeping a more narrow focus on the theme of "we the resistance/rebellion have to fight against the bad guys the Empire/First Order" and not trying to drag out every dumb or unneccessary thing TFA left open. If that means a disjointed movie as compared to the one that came before, then I'll take it. But it does make me think the 9th movie will have problems trying to continue and finish the story, since TLJ feels more like a intense side-story (with the main characters still being involved). Now, I hope The Mouse isn't reading this and getting any stupid ideas, but a 10th movie would make sense with how TLJ solved its plot. But I mean, who the fuck wants The Mouse to do that?

So does this make Hux Tyce?
