“Don’t be a webcomic artist. Someone might make a meme of you and your life will be forever ruined.”

Ahahahahah, never change Dobson. You're easy to make fun of because you're self important and get worked up anytime anyone offers any criticism on your art. Also because you drew a bunch of creepy fetish art. /co/ trolls didn't make you jerk off to Fix-a-Flat how-to videos, that's all on you.
And how can you make a 4-panel gag comic and get worked up when people remove your words and photoshop your face onto your selfinsert? Its called not taking yourself so seriously and being able to laugh or at least shrug it off when someone takes the piss.
Tim Buckley listened to criticism and improved. TIM "B^U" BUCKLEY.
If being a webcomic is such a thankless job, explain how even Buckley’s making bank now, the author of One Punch Man got his comic turned into a show and the numerous people who are inspired by Lackadaisy’s artwork? Or even Penny Arcade?
Non-rhetorical answer:
Dobson is sort of right, but for the wrong reasons.
The issue now with trying to make it in Webcomics is the competition. Its almost impossible now to get noticed unless you (or some dedicated fans) work the social media hard, because there's so much stuff out there already. And only more coming, now that the barriers for entry are so low.
Buckley isn't exactly "making bank" anymore, but he's able to support a family- the internet says he used to make a pretty brisk income, but was smart enough to put that into a house.
Penny-Arcade is less a webcomic than its own damn industry at this point. Tycho & Gabe transitioned from basement dwelling nerds to business owners. Penny Arcade were also innovators in the "getting companies to pay us to make promotional materials".
Sidenote: Gaming comics also have a (comparatively) very easy time attracting sponsors because its easy to know who your audience is (gamers), explain that audience to advertisers/ad networks, and that audience also spends a lot of money. This stuff is absolutely vital now that online advertising dollars have largely dried up. Patreon is sort of counter acting this, but the income stream is highly volatile, especially year-to-year.
Lackadaisy's artist doesn't depend on Lackadaisy's income, its more of a labor of love. And I think if anyone was able to competently photoshop Lackadaisy into some mocking ban art, I think that's one of those times you're going to be too impressed to be mad.
(And thank you for reminding me to check Lackadaisy.)
Also none of these comic artists have a history of disturbing fetish art.(And if they had one, Rebbecca Suger was hired by Cartoon Network despite the library of Edd Ed & Eddy porn she drew.) All you have to do to get Dobson engaged is place a bicycle pump into the comic, and he only has himself to blame for that.
Webcomics definitely aren't for easily offended, self-important asses with inflated egos like Dobson. You need to have a love of your creation for its own sake, a thick skin, and fairly deep masochistic streak.
