I would go with the obvious answer, but that would be too obvious.
So I'm going to go with they want to have something to prove. It's like Chris-Chan and A-Log & buddies or the greater Commentary Community and their "efforts". They latch onto a lolcow, only for them to, whether they mean to do it or not, end up revealing they have just as many skeletons in the proverbial closet as the person they're trying to make fun of. It's like a runaway train that can't slow down.
And Neil's connections with Ross, Jim and the "King of /Pol/" means that this shit is the ultimate rabbit hole. And it'll be a long time before people stop falling in it.

Yes, I can totally believe this was a long con involving showing his lumpy ass on camera and posting comments on Family Guy hentai.
