It seems like there's no downside to staying in. Plattner stays in: he gets millions of dollars in donations, gets a shot at being Senator, and the worst thing that could happen is he gets blown out on election day. Compare that with what you get for dropping out: all the downside with none of the upside. You're still unhireable in anything outside of politics because they aired all your dirty laundry and destroyed your reputation (but without the chance of rebuilding it in elected office). You didn't get a chance to reform your party, infact you made them rig another primary. You're going to be replaced with a paint by numbers member of the party and your movement is dead. The only thing I can think of that would have made him drop out is if his wife or mother asked him to, and he couldn't go on if they no longer believed in him.
