I think it's a matter of internal cohesion vs. external exposure, maybe. Nevermind prison statistics about homosexual sex crimes, because that has no bearing on an average guy's immediate/internal reality, which all too often includes seeing sensationalist crap designed to drive people to anxiety on the news and whatever porn he beats his meat to.
