So, to summarize the Deck Saga thus far:

• Patrick gets it into his head to turn his house's second story overhanging roof into a second story balcony.
• The pests report him to the city of Milwaukee (which is still smarting from the $500k they paid out.)
• The city informs him his deck isn't up to code. Patrick responds like a rational, level-headed adult.
• The city seemingly backs down. Patrick appears mollified.
• Now, instead of checking only the new balcony, the city intends to give him the home inspection equivalent of a full body cavity search.

I'm laughing just thinking about the twists and turns. This is a better story than anything Patrick ever wrote.

This is why settlements are useless if you're trying to make a point. They're a cop-out to avoid setting any kind of legal precedent. Yes, you'll hear no end of glazing from lawyer types about how settlements are "better for everybody" than "long, drawn-out trials" ... but they're full of shit. That pesky, long, drawn-out process is called "due process" and you're entitled to it every bit as much as the coward trying to bribe their way out of it against you.

Conversely, this is also why settlements are baked into most city budgets, because it gets rid of nuisances like Fatty less expensively than litigation would, and eliminates any risk of setting an unpleasant precedent. Imagine how devastating it could have been to the city of Milwaukee to establish some kind of actual legal precedent that Fatty is in any way "untouchable" by local law enforcement.
