Season 2 is actually pretty different from Season 1, though in kind of subtle ways that you may not notice when watching but just kind of feel in your subconscious. The humor is more manic and the show more excitable and there's more humor and jokes that lean towards the older audience the show found itself stuck with after Season 1. Season 1 is very much entirely a show for young girls. In Season 2 they realize "Hey, we have this huge adult audience, let's try and pander to them a little bit".
Lauren faust is like the antithesis of most modern cartoonists. Instead of trying to hijack what shouldve been a fun silly kids show with making it her own personal therapy session, she actually set out to make a fun show for kids first and foremost and any of the more adult content was practically network decided with her leaving during season 2.

More toddler & me reviews + rambling.
New format bc I thought my walls of text between ppl's conversations is kind of annoying.

My toddler will not sit through nonsense and appreciates straight-forward language and simplistic visuals. We often shut off movies that are too busy, over-animated, and chattery or take too long to get going. I'm surprised she has not liked most Illumination films. She also skips on things like most Don Bluth films that are competently made but have too much talking for her. She also lost interest in Nimona the moment the two gay characters held hands, which made me lol. I still haven't shown her most princess films (wary to bc I think too many princess films make little girls act bratty). She'll occasionally watch a live action film—The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story—but prefers animation with clear visuals, simple language (note: simple, not stupid), and emotive animation. We also skipped Ferdinand, which has a perfect first 30 min then seems to devolve into forced comedy. Anyway, I'm enjoying observing her and thinking about what makes movies click for her.

DIG UP VIRGINIA, BOOOOOOYS. The movie is okay...ish. Governor Ratcliffe, Wiggins, and the other white dudes are my fav. Virginia Company and Mine, Mine, Mine are 10/10 songs. The character designs are great. Very western without being bug-eyed like Disney often is. At the beginning of the movie the main native tribe is coming back from war with a neighboring tribe, which I forgot and also find kinda funny since the film treats the Powhatan tribe like it's the only one. They're not fighting the white men to protect other tribes, only themselves. The story is kinda meh. I remember as a kid not understanding the ripple metaphor and as an adult the scene is like, "This is supposed to be wise and profound advice that turns the tides??" Also it wasn't clear if Ratcliffe was upset to learn there was no gold or if he was intentionally lying to the company. It is technically impressive and well made but learning the real story sours the film. Idk if they could ever do a live action version unless they went about it old school live action Disney film style and presented the real story under a different title. Or not cuz y'know controversy and ragebaiting sells these days and most people don't actually care.
The technology in this movie is crazy and seamless. Great animation. I remember in the BTS on the DVD that the animators were like "We actually had to study anatomy to animate Tarzan," which makes me lol. Film remembers it's a cartoon and all the characters are flying around, squashing and stretching. Tarzan is a Gary-Stu. Does he have vocal mimicry powers and is he able to fly around the jungle faster than anyone in the book? The ability to learn language instantly? Ah well, doesn't matter. Jane's pure excitement of nature and gorillas is wholesome. All the characters have clear motivation. The intense scenes are actually intense. And it's a movie about nature without being an environmentalist film that guilts the audience for daring to be alive. Also treats animals with respect and like (mostly) real animals instead of a vehicle for comedy. Not bad. Trashin' the Camp is my fav part bc it was a creative and fun way to depict animals exploring a human campsite. Just a fun to watch movie.
Have you heard of Death? Well how about DEATH 2?! Colorful and makes me cry buckets of tears. Frida Kahlo's part makes me lol. I don't know any of the other refs to Mexican media (but would like to learn cuz I've never watched it). I think it slogs a bit during the third act and kind of repeats itself. Anyway the kid who plays Miguel can fuckin' SIIINNNNG. Also has an interesting setting and a good message. I def won't mind watching it again but I think I might cry every time. I wish there was more expansion on the world but I guess that would make the slogging part feel even sloggier. I guess I'm biased bc I always liked Dia de Muertos in Spanish class and cartoons (The Wild Thornberries episode comes to mind). Anyway, I heard Disney tried to trademark Dia de Muertos or is that a myth? Bc lmao.

Ostatnio edytowane:
Reminds me of something I read about the Pixar animators trying to walk in snowboards to get an idea of how to animate the army men in Toy Story.
Haha!! And that reminds me of army men cosplay

I cannot get over the fact that the new Minions movie is not only apparently good, but the critics are saying that it is a fantastic love letter to classic films.

To think, the first Minions movie is widely considered to be little more than a child-pandering kids film, and the second only slightly better. I always said that the Minions couldn't sustain a whole movie on their own, yet now this film apparently did it?

Holy crap.

My man, I say this entirely without irony, MLP:FIM is a legitimately good children's show. It's got a decent production value, most of the characters are pretty fun, and the writing and VA work doesn't make you as the babysitter want to kill yourself. If you ignore all the brony shit it's a good old fashioned kid's cartoon like the kind they used to air in the early 2000s.
I agree as an unironic pegasister

I saw it and liked it more than Toy Story 5 and it was funnier than Scary Movie 6 . I think the world is coming to an end soon. You should stock up on shot guns and can goods.

I watch a good bit of movies with my niece when I watch her. Usually will go swimming or let her wail on me with a foam sword (it makes me laugh when she’s says “I could kill you” or “you lost that arm!” Like I really need to let her parents know that she’s a bit aggressive, but it’s hilarious).

My brother fucking hates Frozen. Mostly because he knows of the gay shit surrounding it and how forced the “love story” between the sisters is.

We’ve actually had this conversation, but Mulan in general is the far better love story that isn’t about erotic love. Mulan is about Filial love. Not just with Mulan and her father, but Shang and his father as well. Honestly Shang does have a momentary wrestling with his emotions when Mulan is revealed and she tries to explain her motivations for tricking all of them. Like moments before he just found out his Dad got killed and was pursuing an enemy force in a mix of duty and revenge. Like they do animate him having conflict about her motives before the court faggot incel rages at her.

Mulan does have the whole girl power shit, but it’s much more tolerable and is more about Mulan feeling like a fuck up which she is. The Mother and Grandmother are honestly pretty funny. A Girl Worth Fighting For ending with the reality of war and heavily implying the Mongols eliminated both the Imperial Army (showing their corpses) and villagers.

Shan Yu is just a great villain. No musical number, just a menacing threat. Every line he has is great. Great design, too.

@Castoreum

Movies with kids is fun because every so often a kid will interrogate you on what’s happening and why. Like a few of my nieces and nephews will demand I pause and explain what’s going on and what they think is going on. Sometimes they tell me fever dream shit.

I legit can't tell if you're right or if maybe the minions getting a redemption arc the same year as bubsy should be taken as a sign of hope. What little we can get given how fucked every thing else is.

>lucas is trapped in a cage by an evil woman
what did Minions mean by this?
The obvious allegory is Disney but personally I view it as an alleogry for Marcia Lucas, his bitch ex-wife that people have (erroneously) credited for decades as "saving Star Wars".
Or not cuz y'know controversy and ragebaiting sells these days and most people don't actually care.
The injins were bitching and complaining before Pocahontas even first came out, Disney also seems more than happy to quietly forget about it. It will never get a live action remake because it'll be too controversial and because redskins are poor and cannot be bilked for easy money the way that the chinks can.

I never much liked Tarzan as a kid and even as an adult the best I can do is praise it for technical excellence, especially since it formed the technological bedrock for Atlantis and Tresure Planet which are two of my favorite children's films of that era.

I'd never go out of my way to watch it but I also have nieces and compared to the other shows that they liked I think that FIM is definitely the one that made me hate watching them the least.

I grew up watching it, I think I first started watching it at 8 or 9? I'm 20 now and it's still top ten best shows I've watched, I'm not even ashamed to be an adult that's into it. It's just a good show. Season 9 is the best imo.

If anything I enjoy it now that I'm an adult that can buy all the merch I want and don't have to deal with my bible class going "You watch Friendship is MAGIC... Isn't magic satanic?".

It's a good show that teaches good morals, there's some LGBT stuff sprinkled in but it's actually in the bg. Like actually in the bg, like you'd have to pause and squint to see it.

I pity the people who grew up in the 2010s Internet and had to experience the autism hellscape of MLP and bronies and those who were NOT a fan of it since this shit was EVERYWHERE.
That said, this show spawned some of the most high quality fan animations I've seen out of any fandom from the time.
(the .mov series from Max is a trip in and of itself that should be watched in its entirety).

The bronies, for some unknowable reason, had one of the highest per capita concentration of genuinely talented artists I've ever seen in any fandom.

I never expected that blatant IQ-draining abomination that's the Minions franchise to be considered good. Or be mentioned next to a new Bubsy game as another good thing (which he is, oddly enough).

I watched American Tail 2, the sequel where the kid mouse goes to the West, after having liked the first movie. As typical of sequels, it's weaker than the original, but it's much better than what it should be, the animation is very good.

I sometimes wonder if it's because they didn't want to let their queen Lauren Faust down. The uptick in fan animation and even fan fiction around this time dedicated to just ponies at first was astounding.
