Maybe I'm mixing my metaphors, but it seems like the boiling frog in practice. DSA folks run in deep blue areas where they're a guaranteed win, and they do just enough to try to spin the message "Socialism isn't bad, right?" to set the stage for additional DSA types to run for other offices. That's why voting in local elections is so important - those races have the greatest impact on one's day to day life and the DSA people start out locally to set the stage for potential victories in higher positions.

It kind of does though. Those properties are a significant up-front investment and have maintaince and utility costs. Especially with Mamdani's new legislation, there's little incentive to put money into what is essentially the housing market of an urban city. The New York Housing Authority itself is currently sitting on around 60,000 single and double bedroom apartments that are uninhabitable due to their condition, but there's no money in the budget to bring them up to livable standards. Despite the "rent freeze", rent costs have just risen in government-stabilized housing. In non-government housing providers, the rent freeze has capped prices at a point that don't even meet the maintaince costs in some places. Eventually, the private owners are going to decide the juice isn't worth the squeeze, invest elsewhere, and that property ends up belonging to the city. People who have money to invest in an apartment building can afford to take a hit and move that money elsewhere, and that decision has far less bearing on the investor then the tenants occupying the building. Instead of Joe Boomer being your landlord, it's the government. Now, you're paying almost the same if not more to live in a Mamdani jeetbox with the assurance in government competence to keep up with any issues, assuming you don't get denied at the beginning of the process for not being Indian enough. Don't even get me started on "taxing the rich", they've already wiped billions from their annual tax pool by running companies out.

These are both cities that are more than capable of supporting the needed infrastructure.
