They really do amplify the shittitude of the middle ages though. I forget where I saw this, I think it was a tumblr post, but there's this historical village in England that's kept the same as it was in the middle ages, and it's actually painted and nice and clean and just looks like an old town. Some movie came to do some filming there and they made the folks repaint the buildings to be gray and brown, they threw hay and shit and garbage everywhere, and they color graded the final scenes to be even more dismal. Hollywood absolutely portrays the past as worse than it actually was and calls it "realistic" because they've sucked all the joy out of everything.
