Random thought unrelated to the goings-on: why was Nick in the closet as long as he was? Who cared that he was gay?
His parents are likely revolting degenerates who probably said "Any hole's a goal, find your hole".
Kayla is, to borrow someone else's turn of phrase a "voracious lesbian".
The kids were homeschooled and isolated, and were probably taught everything Nick does is normal.
He has no friends or business associates who'd have cared. So... why not come out ages ago?
Qayla's churches seemed to be pretty laid-back theologically - certainly easygoing enough not to go full DEUS VULT on a crackhead bringing his polycule to services and dipping out mid-sermon to snort lines in their bathroom. I can't imagine they were the bar on his closet door.
Was it the grandparents (and/or something in the trust) perhaps? We've all speculated that the children only exist as trust fund optimization parameters, but presumably nothing in the trust requires him to pretend to like heterosexuality or be a good Christian husband.
