Really, the best thing Nick had going for him was that he had good (that is, ridiculous) enemies.

Ralph is capable of and has done monstrous things but he has at times displayed remorse about the things he's done. He is incapable of not handing the wheel to his dark passenger, making things worse and causing him to double down as an ego defense mechanism like the WWE taught him. Nick lacks the ability to feel bad for doing bad things and in fact relishes in it. His only remorse is for getting caught. There is no separation between Nick's worst impluses and Nick's everyday self.
