Voters were so disgusted by the Democrats' behavior that the Republican candidate who originally faced Wellstone, Norm Coleman, flipped a -8% deficit in the polls into a +2% victory over Walter Mondale (former Democratic presidential candidate & himself a longtime Senator from Minnesota too) after the latter had replaced Wellstone on the ballot. So yes, as a matter of fact it is entirely possible to overdo wielding a martyr's corpse as a cudgel in American politics & end up alienating the very same voters you were trying to rally, the Republicans already took a risk as-is with how they handled Kirk's memorial and I would definitely argue (based on, for example, the results of recent primaries where the candidates supported by the administration present at said memorial won) they managed it better than the Democrats did Wellstone's.
I took some time to learn about this from different channels to do your post justice, including reading his dissertation "BLACK MILITANTS IN THE GHETTO: WHY THEY BELIEVE IN VIOLENCE", which fully supports him as a far leftist agitator.
Looking by how they wielded the "cudgel", is that someone on his eulogy said 10 times to vote for his replacement. Leaving out the fact that changing candidate 10 days before election is unlikely to win regardless of cicumstance, perhaps I should have called it a scalpel, because you can use something well and you can use it badly. I've read the 9/11 claim, but found no support for it beyond rumors or people saying it after his death.

That's true. I'm not even mad, i just think it shows how pathetic and sociopathic the left is. It makes me wonder how they'll react if a left leaning figure similar to Charlie was assassinated and people on the right celebrated.
Oh if the tables were turned and some Kirk equivalent on the left was killed? They would call us sociopathic Nazi's who celebrate political violence.
