FRISCO, Texas — Karmelo Anthony, the teen accused of fatally stabbing another teen, Austin Metcalf, at a Frisco track meet, has been indicted on a murder charge, officials said.

A grand jury indicted Anthony on Tuesday, according to the Collin County District Attorney's Office. A murder charge is punishable by 5-99 years or life in prison.

Anthony, a 17-year-old former student of Frisco Centennial High School, was arrested and charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of Frisco Memorial High School student athlete Austin Metcalf in April at a track meet in Frisco ISD's Kuykendall Stadium. He was released from jail later that month after his bond was reduced from $1 million to $250,000.

Anthony has claimed self defense in the case, which garnered national attention, heightening racial tensions and raising security concerns among everyone connected to the case, including both families and Judge Angela Tucker, who is presiding over the case.

"We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond," Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a statement Tuesday. "That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core. But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves."

Anthony's attorney, Mike Howard, called Tuesday's indictment "an expected and routine step in the legal process."

"Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial," Howard said. "Of course, Karmelo looks forward to his day in court. It's only in a trial that a jury will hear the full story, one that includes critical facts and context that the grand jury simply didn't get to hear."

Howard again raised Anthony's self defense claim in his statement Tuesday.

"We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmelo Anthony may have acted in self defense," Howard said. "Self defense is a fundamental right guaranteed every American."

Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, told WFAA in a statement that he's "pleased that we are moving forward."

“With the first degree murder indictment, it now goes into the court system," Jeff Metcalf said. "I fully believe that justice will be served for Austin Metcalf. I look forward to the forthcoming trial. But it will never bring my son back.“

Under his bond conditions, Anthony is required to wear an ankle monitor and ask permission to leave his home. If Anthony violates any conditions of his bond, he will have to return to jail. He graduated and received his high school diploma in May, but did not attend the ceremony, WFAA previously reported.

Anthony allegedly confessed to the stabbing immediately after he was arrested, claiming he was defending himself from Metcalf, officials said, as WFAA previously reported.

A witness reportedly told police that Metcalf told Anthony he had to move out from under the Memorial High School tent. Anthony responded by opening his bag and reaching inside, WFAA previously reported.

"Touch me and see what happens," Anthony told Metcalf, according to a witness.

Metcalf reportedly then touched Anthony, the witness told a responding officer, and Anthony told Metcalf to punch him and see what would happen. Soon afterward, the witness said, Metcalf reportedly grabbed Anthony to tell him to move. At which point, the affidavit continues, Anthony reportedly pulled out what the witness recalled as a black knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest before running away.

The deep tension sparked by the incident has raised concerns that the case may be tried outside of Collin County. Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis told WFAA that the judge will make that decision at the time of trial.

Actually it doesnt! It has something to do with what the rural early whites ate in the 1700/1800s is memory serves. I think it was like the old school equivalent of trailer trash
If blacks can re-purpose nigga to mean friend, then whites should just re-purpose cracka to mean the person who cracks the whip. Just embrace that word Tyrion style.

The backpack appeared to contain snacks, Cheez-its, a charging cable, word puzzles (titled "Peppa Pig" and "Scoob-Doo"), a vocabulary assignment
3.7 GPA btw.

Do you honestly think he could live happily ever after if he walks? Google is a mighty tool and anyone googling his name when he looks for a job should automatically go "Thanks for your application we notify you" which is HR talk for "Fuck off" Seriously would you hire someone like that? He might get a "job" at your local black thug gang and hopefully life sorts itself out. But honest work? I wouldn't think so

But in all honesty I hope he gets a long prison sentence and then they put him in a white majority prison where he can be the good little nigger bitch
Oh he's fucked for the rest of his life. He would have to change his name and leave the country. Ask the nipsey hustle guy in NYC how he's doing on the job market

So the rumour that the nog was stealing seems to be substantiated by the fact that Austin's backpack was inside his backpack. Why no pictures of this, it seems important?
I thought this was a typo by @holyhandgrenade... confirmation would be appreciated.

If so, nigga is truly fucked because then Austin was the one defending himself from a thief.

This is likely the scenario. He was found out or thought he had, and tried to stab Metcalf to have enough time to run away. He didn't expect him to die.

To get back on topic, it's looking less and less like Anthony has a real defense of what he did. Not that I ever thought he did, but this is crazy. Did the defense cross-examine the teen at all?
they did it's at the end of the spoiler in my post it wasn't helpful to them
Worse for Anthony’s self-defense claims?
Yes that's what I meant

I thought this was a typo by @holyhandgrenade... confirmation would be appreciated.
the reporting I am reading says the backpack also allegedly contained Anthony's backpack which makes no sense I will try to confirm if they meant Austin's backpack from another source

Daily mail is saying one of the teens testified that Anthony had the knife out and in his hand already when he was shoved.

they are also saying that three people got kicked out one for calling a sheriff's deputy a racial slur lmao

I hate how different reporters are giving different details because their quote of Metcalf saying something along the lines of "we're in Frisco you don't have anything." before getting stabbed is perfect
Edit: neither the fox website nor daily mail say that he had Metcalf's backpack in his backpack so I do not think that is the case

Ostatnio edytowane:
I like that they shaved his head and gave him makeup and clothing to make him look younger, smaller, and weaker. Just really push that he was a scurred lil nog.
He has a young looking face, and Austin was a strong looking young man.

That’s about all they can do to bolster his “self defense” claim.

It's sounding more and more like Karamello was there looking for any excuse to get violent. That he went there with the express purpose of starting shit, shanking someone, and getting away with it by crying self defense. What a stupid nigger.

Edit: also " 'Melo" is such a faggy nickname. No one aside from some old-ass, unemployed hippy (like the real kind) whose only activities ever is getting high on weed should ever be called " 'Melo".

Now we have a 16 year old witness

NBC 5 will not be identifying minors who testify in court, per court order.

The prosecution called a 16-year-old witness to the stand. The witness will be a junior at Memorial High School next year. He said he was a football player, and he ran the 400M and hurdles in track. He said he knew the Metcalf twins.

He testified that on the day of the stabbing, he and his teammates were "chilling" under the tent, which he described as "home base," as the long-distance runners were being called. He said the rain wasn't bad until after the incident.

The witness said Anthony walked up from the left side staircase on the bleachers and sat in the Memorial tent. He said he questioned why Anthony was in their tent, but thought he might have been friends with someone there, and that it "could be all good."

The witness described murmuring under the tent about whether "anyone knows this guy," referring to Anthony. He said Metcalf asked Anthony multiple times to leave the tent, but Anthony refused, and that Metcalf became frustrated.

When asked to reenact the way Metcalf pushed Anthony, the 16-year-old witness did a one-handed nudge to the shoulder. This is notably different from what a previous witness described, who said the push involved two hands.

"Did it appear Austin wanted to fight?" Wirskye asked.

"No," the witness said.

The witness testified that he "would never think someone would have a knife at a track meet," and that he thought Anthony's hand in his backpack was a bluff.

He testified that after the stabbing, Austin jumped up and said, "I got stabbed, I got stabbed." He said that if it appeared that there was going to be a fight, more people would have been standing and recording on their phones.

"No one under the tent saw this coming?" Wirskye said.

"No, sir," the witness said.

He described Anthony leaving the bleachers as "calm" and said he thought Anthony was trying to get away. He also told the jury that Austin did not want to fight, that Anthony was the aggressor, and that the stabbing was not done in self-defense.

During cross-examination, the witness said he went to the Frisco Police Department to talk to investigators, and that he found out while in the interview room that Austin had passed away.

The witness said he got the impression that Anthony and another student knew each other by the way they greeted each other, and that between two and four minutes passed before people started asking why Anthony was there.

The 16-year-old said it was Austin alone who started asking Anthony. Shook pointed out that this contradicts his statement to investigators immediately after the incident, in which he apparently said that both Austin and Hunter had asked Anthony to leave. Shook asked the witness to read his previous statement, and the witness said he recalls saying that to investigators.

As cross-examination continued, the defense focused on the size difference between Anthony and Austin. Austin was taller and outweighed Anthony by at least 50 pounds. The witness agreed that someone might find Austin's size "intimidating."

for this one I am also going to include the fox reporting which seems to include more actual quotes from the testimony

16-year-old rising junior took the stand. He told jurors he was on the football team and track team. He said that even though Metcalf and his twin brother were older than him, he knew them from football and track.

He testified that on the morning of the deadly track meet, he helped set up the tent, which he called, "a home base for us." He remembered Anthony walking up and sitting under the tent.

"What did you think when he sat there," the prosecutor asked.

"I was questioning why he was here," the teen said.

He said he wondered if Anthony had friends there. He told jurors it's "weird" for students to come to other tents.

Once Anthony sat down, the teen said he heard Metcalf ask him why he was there.

He said Metcalf asked him multiple times to leave but he did not. Anthony said several times that he had something in his bag. The teen testified that the knife already had to be opened because there was no way he could have stabbed Metcalf that fast.

"Did either Austin or Karmelo get angry?" the state asked.

"Not angry but more frustrated," the teen said.

He said he didn’t know why it escalated so fast. He testified that Anthony got more aggressive the more he was asked to leave.

"Did it appear Austin wanted to fight?" the prosecutor asked.

"No," the teen said.

When asked why he thought Anthony was bluffing about having something in his bag, the teen said it was because, "I would never think someone would have a knife at a track meet."

"Was anyone on their feet because a fight was going to break out?" the state asked.

"No, sir," the teen replied.

"Would people be standing if they thought a fight was about to break out?" the prosecutor asked.

"Yes, sir, recording on cellphones," the teen said.

Under cross-examination, the defense attorney asked the 16-year-old witness about the recorded statements he gave at the police station that day.

He admitted that he was able to communicate and text other teammates while waiting to be interviewed. That’s how he found out that Metcalf had died.

He also admitted that he saw Anthony greet someone under the tent who he allegedly knew.

"Did the other student ever say that he knew Karmelo Anthony?" the defense asked.

"No, not when Karmelo Anthony was question about why he was there," the teen said.

The teen said Anthony was under the tent for just a few minutes before he was questioned. Metcalf was the first to question him and then "everybody else did."

Defense attorney Toby Shook asked the teen to read from the transcript of his police interview. According to the transcript, he said it was "Austin and Hunter telling Karmelo Anthony to leave."

"What Austin asking where Karmelo was from? Anything like that?" the defense asked.

"No, sir," the teen said.

When asked if he heard Anthony warn Metcalf several times that he had something in his bag, the teen replied, "yes." But he said he’s not sure if he thought that was a warning.

"I’m not sure what it was," he said.

The defense questioned the teen about the size difference between Anthony and Metcalf. Metcalf outweighed Anthony by about 50 or 60 pounds, and the teen admitted that "maybe" he could be considered intimidating.

As an aside hearing teenagers talk like teenagers during a murder trial is funny. Such a typical teenager thing to say if it appeared there was going to be a fight people would have been standing and filming like it's obvious. He do be right though. The defense is asking him to read a statement he made to police after the murder where he said both Metcalf and his brother confronted Anthony. Even though today he said only Metcalf the murdered one did. It's still a weak argument when they already have two other witnesses testifying that it was just Austin but meh. Muh size difference cope from the defense

It’s neurolinguistic programming. The more times the attorney can make the jury hear the word “mellow”, the more they subconsciously don’t perceive the nigger as violent.

So Anthony didn't have track cleats or a cleat sharpener in his backpack then, interesting. Also dailymail has a video of one of the three that was kicked out, I assume she was the one caught filming as they took her purse. Worth noting she is wearing a black shirt with "JUSTICE" printed on it lol.

Thanks. I think it's likely he was indeed stealing stuff, but having someone's backpack in another one is strange because they aren't precisely small and Austin would have noticed it and said something.

This is kinda crazy. It genuinely seems like the defense has no explanation or justification other than "my client is a dumb nigger your honor."

Why in God's name did he not take a plea deal?
My guess is the plea offered was not very good, so his lawyer advised that rolling the dice at trial had a low chance to free him, but little downside risk.

Remember by Texas law, his penalties are capped by his age. Something like 30 years max, I think? Don't hold me to that number.

If the prosecutors have a rock solid case, maybe they offered a plea deal of a lesser degree of murder and 20 years in prison, with parole possible after 15 years. Well, if he's capped at 30 years if convicted and the upside is walking away free, maybe you roll the dice on mistrial/hung jury/undeserved not guilty verdict. It's a longshot, but juries are very unpredictable.

Lawyers get paid a lot more for going to trial, so the lawyer had high incentive to gas him up for this strategy. His family is also borderline retarded & thinks he dindu nuffin, so they're onboard. Also, just because he gets convicted doesn't mean he gets the max sentence. So maybe he wastes a bunch of his family's stolen charity & the taxpayer's DA funds to get a very similar sentence, but not much worse than the plea offer.

Don't mistake any of this for me empathizing with him, he sucks and I think he should fucking hang. I'm just playing out the scenario. His lawyer is supposedly pricey & skilled.

Because he didn du nuffin. Duh.

Seriously though, assuming there was an offer, when you're 17 there's not much difference between 30-50 years and 99 years, you're still fucked.

No one's accusing you of anything. As far as the lawyer goes once he heard there was $600,000 in donations from suckers he was all in.

Goddamn that judge for blocking cameras in the court. PUT A CAMERA IN EVERY FUCKING COURTROOM IN AMERICA AND LEAVE THEM ON.

They can't use the "my client is retarded" card because they already tried to pass him as an honor student. But you never know.
