Hungarian police said they will not prevent anyone from taking part in next month’s Budapest Pride parade, signaling a shift in LGBTQ+ policy in the country since Prime Minister Péter Magyar took office earlier this month.
“The Budapest Metropolitan Police has approved the 2026 Budapest Pride Parade and also has issued restrictive orders in relation to three counter-demonstrations,” a police spokesperson told POLITICO on Friday.
The announcement reinforces Magyar’s pledge to pursue a more liberal approach to LGBTQ+ rights in Hungary.
Magyar’s predecessor, right-wing prime minister Viktor Orbán, was known for his government’s crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights. In early 2025, Hungary’s parliament passed legislation that eventually led to the banning of the Budapest Pride parade.
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, a political rival of Orbán and Green politician, however, found a legal loophole and proceeded with the march last year despite the ban. More than 100,000 people attended, including several European politicians and critics of Orbán’s government.
Karácsony was subsequently charged for defying the government ban, but the court suspended proceedings in March. Last month, the EU’s top court struck down the anti-LGBTQ ruling by Orbán’s government.
Karácsony welcomed the unbanning of pride parade this year. “This is the right decision. It demonstrates that, despite the suffocating political climate of the past decade and a half, the culture of freedom in Hungary has endured,” he told POLITICO on Friday.
“It shows that there are still people with the courage to stand firm. It shows that what is plainly true cannot be obscured by dishonest rhetoric,” he added.
Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party, told POLITICO: “We are very happy with this. It’s a hopeful signal for democracy and fundamental rights in Hungary after years of attacks on the LGBTQI+ community.”

Pride in Hungary was an absolute nothingburger, between 2010-2014 like 1-2k people attended max and that includes the bald fellas throwing eggs at the faggots. Average Hungarian throught it's a freak show.
Then Orban started fighting the good fight in the Great Culture War and every policy Orban disagreed with became a symbol of resistance for the people who hated him due to being a corrupt, despotic thief - 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' is basic human psychology. In 2021 (anti-faggot legislation) attendance jumped like 10x to cca 20.000 attendees/event and in 2025 it exploded another 10x to 200.000 attendees because he tried to ban Pride altogether. Most of them weren't even gay or really sympathetic to the cause, it was just an anti-government protest with rainbow flags and random half-naked faggots writhing to techno.
Based Viktor has done it! He turned a dying, irrelevant eastern-European troon parade with more skinheads attending than actual faggots into the biggest anti-regime rally in the country. Police didn't even enforce the ban properly, the organizers and the attendees both got away without any issues and Pride is now more accepted in the Hungarian mainstream than ever, causing polling on gay marriage and such to shift.
Meanwhile the country had Burkina Faso/Congo tier institutional corruption, the then-ruling party had a gay sex scandal about once a month, and his brother was a billionaire from running a Pajeet work visa company while Orban shoveled in 100.000+ jeets into Hungary as economic migrants to help lil' bro get a head start on his startup. The current guy literally founded his party and started running for PM because of the non-stop pedophile scandals of Orban's party.
Moral of the story: you don't want the figurehead of conservative, white ideology in your country to be a half-gypsy half-jewish thieving subhuman that almost everyone hates both at home and abroad, even in their own international 'sovereignist' communities.
