Here's a question: what is the most miniscule possible change you could make to Chris, as a person (without changing events before 2000), that would have prevented Classic Chris from ever becoming famous on the internet?

If you're asking for an external force or event post-2000 that would have prevented Chris from rising to prominence, then I don't think there is one, but if your questions is more existential, then I have some ideas.

Chris took to the internet because his mind linked fame with success. That was fairly common for the time (and still remains today) -- most people think that fame = wealth, but peruse the Forbes list of wealthiest individuals, and you'll find a bunch of names you've never heard of before (unless you're an avid reader of Forbes, I suppose). Because Chris wanted to be a famous cartoonist, he put not only his work online but also himself. He reveled in all the attention he was getting -- even the negative attention -- because he assumed that he had legions of fans for every troll he encountered.

Things would have been totally different if he had a different outlook. If Chris had a healthy case of social anxiety or even just a concept of shame, he would hate putting himself out there for all to see. Or if he had read about cartoonists like Gary Larson who hardly made any public appearances but were still successful and beloved, maybe he would have emulated that.
Whatever the case, if he didn't want so badly to be a celebrity, he wouldn't be the king of lolcows today -- just a local weirdo / village idiot type. He'd still be a slow-in-the-mind, of course, but there are plenty of low IQ retards out there bumbling through life mostly anonymously. He may have still gotten into some of the same messes (e.g., getting kicked out of community college, harassing anyone who gets close to him, getting banned from The Game Place, setting his house on fire), but we wouldn't have had the trolling sagas, and nobody outside of Ruckersville would have known him.

I would change, Chris deciding to upload Sonichu #0 on the internet. I think it'd be better for him if he had done flyer type give outs. I feel like Sonichu was the reason most trolls were, well trolls. (Alec with Copyright and such things)

Considering he mutilated his own groin in an attempt to become woman pre-HRT, and had to be practically forced to seek medical attention, I think it really was a branching path. On one path, Chris fucks his own mom, and on the other, he kills himself and possibly takes Barb with him.

If the lolcow was a murderous psycho -- instead of just a psycho -- then all of the lolcows could be seen less as funny freaks and more as dangerous freaks in that timeline. But as @Saint Agustin said, I doubt that imbecile could use a gun, much less pull off a shooting without being taken out by cops "jerkops" or armed bystanders "jerks" first.

I highly doubt he would have shot up a school, mostly because his high school time was always looked at fondly for him. He didn't harbor intense resentment to the kids. Maybe his 4th grade school but that was more directed at the school administration at the time.

Could Chris mass attack somewhere? Sure! He could have absolutely done something like the Game Place, but at the same time, Chris really took efforts to disguise himself on some of his attacks, or beat his feet when an employee confronted him. Though I think something like ramming his van into the Game Place would have been something he thought of, he probably wouldn't have because it would have damaged the merchandise whereas he really just hated Mike.

I don't think him and a gun would go together well. He just can't stand loud noises and the first time he shot it (probably in his backyard or in the basement), would have been enough he'd never do it again. That and unless Barb had one in the house, with ammunition, he probably wouldn't have gotten any store to sell him any ammunition.

I think this is a pretty good take, but I would like to add onto this a little. Chris historically shows a very low frustration tolerance and an aversion to consequences brought on by being coddled by his parents. Barb emotionally swaddled him, and scaffolded a pattern of behavior that we see Chris also mimic throughout his interactions with people. Barb dry begs, whines, and manipulates Chris/people, which Chris then used a means to try and make people feel sorry for him and ignore anything he did. Bob constantly makes excuses for Chris and protected Chris from any consequences as well as reinforced an idea that nothing was ever his fault because people were out to get them. It's naïve to say that everything that happened to Chris was his parent's fault, but I do think that while Chris was shitting himself and doing nothing, Bob & Barb telling him it wasn't his fault, and falling for every excuse he gave.

The one Barb manipulation I distinctly remember that I think is a great example of how it fucked up Chris was when he wanted to go to some convention, and Barb completely shutdown, saying she was going to roll over and die, telling Chris to not even change her clothes and just bury her with what she was wearing, and Chris believed that Barb could actually just "die" through sheer force of willpower. Then Bob comes in and says that they're like a 3 person unit and if any one of them leaves, the other two are going to just die.

Once Chris had a good cry about it, Barb comes in and hugs and is nice, giving him half a subscription to some comic or online thing.

I think Barb too had a level of getting extremely angry with Chris, putting him down, insulting him, then turning around and saying how much she loved him and how much he was this special person who was so smart, after he fucked something up. She just has that bitch persona about her.

I think that's why he could stand Kacey telling him what a fat, worthless fuck he was, and he's all just nonplussed by it, because that was extremely similar to how Barb treated him. I wonder if Flutter is like that behind the scenes...
