Retiring people that young when becoming a judge is a long process involving so much schooling and working their way up seems so incredibly wasteful, just for spite.

More broadly, the move towards making Supreme Court justices people who could conceivably sit on the supreme court for decades is a huge fucking problem IMO. We need to ammend the Judiciary Act to say "No person shall be appointed a District Judge by the Senate until such time as they have held a law licence in good standing with a State bar for 10 years consecutive with no adjudicated disciplinary action. No person shall be appointed to a circuit court panel unless they have been previously appointed by this Senate for a District judge position and have served in that capacity for 10 years. No person shall be appointed by this Senate to the Supreme Court unless they have been appointed as a Circuit judge, and have served in that position for 10 years.
Which means the BARE Fucking minimum age for a Supreme Court appointment would be 65, with decades of experience as a judge and a long list of rulings made to make their judicial acumen known.
Right now, anyone can be a Supreme Court Judge. You reading this right now could be a Supreme Court Judge. I could be a supreme court judge. Donald Trump could become a supreme court judge. All that is required is the President nominating you and convincing 51 Senators to make you one. The constitution is so vague, Trump could in theory nominate himself, with the only barrier being the rule that federal appointees cannot hold more then one Senate confirmed position. So he'd have to resign after the Senate makes him a justice. But he CAN nominate himself.
The Judicial appointments system is broken fundamentally.
Changing the age of retirement is within the power and scope of a state's House and if they passed it legit then I don't think any court could knock it down.
This. Everything I can find about the issue points to it being legal. It will ultimately come down to the language used in the bill, but if they write it cleanly, the only arguments against it are vague and based on subjective things like people acting in good faith.
The consequences would me pretty huge, and not just for Republicans. Like you said, a statewide judicial purge would be chaos, and there's not enough young, qualified lawyers in the nominee pool to fill the vacancies. They would end up filling 3/4 of the state's benches with Ketanji Brown Jackson tier negress queens because competent attorneys don't want to take the pay cut. It would absolutely demolish any independent support for the DNC in the state and everyone will rebel against the DC suburbs during the next cycle. Anyone worth more than a few million in assets are going to fuck right off to West Virginia and Florida. The DNC's current "eat the rich" phase isn't going unnoticed with investors in blue states and an 8-0 state supreme courts mean that Spamberger can rape them as hard and for as long as she wants.
