The Polyglot Community / Conlangers / General Language Learning Autism - Attention seekers that barely speak the languages they claim, pretentious language creators, grifters shilling language learning scams and more!

May I ask what language it is?
I'm not sure about in China, but in parts of the world where your diaspora is, its quite possible it's surviving there and they may have classes etc (although very possibly could not be the cases too)
I think learning dead languages, and especially the languages of your ancestors, is important. You're keeping your culture alive.
If you can't find any good modern textbooks try and find some linguistic overviews on the language. I'm sure some grad student has at least written an introduction to the features and sounds. You might need to learn some linguistic terminology, but that will only help you in learning more of your language and others in the future.
I'm also ethnically Chinese and deep into this linguistics shit, and while I have relatives who speak dialects, I was only ever taught Mandarin.

To my knowledge, the only countries not argued to be part of China that really speak some form of Chinese in any major capacity would probably be Singapore, but also Malaysia.

I've heard Thailand has a pretty high number of Teochew immigrants among their large Chinese population, but apparently, Chinese Thais these days are fairly assimilated into the local populace, and just have Thai first and last names and grow up speaking Thai, making them a little more like, say, Italian Americans.

But yeah sorry to hear about that. And the resource paucity issue is definitely concerning, and something I've encountered with my own heritage dialects. I'd honestly recommend just learning Mandarin, since it's more useful (and that's what my parents forced me to study lol).

Updates on MattvsJapan:

The channel is still dead, but if you look at the comments on the last video, the most recent comments are from two years, so he still mods the comments or has a janny to do for him. He was last on Twitter in December 2024. Apparently, he is still working with Ken Cannon. Just recently, Matt sent an email to mailing list promoting another of Ken's course, this one promising to teach your '25% of the Japanese language ... in three days'. It also named dropped George from Japanese from Zero. George Trombly has been a Japanese teacher since the 1990's, and a series of Japanese and Korean language textbooks and some Japanese YouTube lessons to accompany them.

George found out about this email and ... he was not pleased.

I've been trying to learn japanese for a while (still at N5 so I am very retarded still), but as others have mentioned here it seems like all these grifter scammers fag always go for japanese and I am very tired of youtube recommending me those videos.
Also dont know if someone has mentioned it in the thread already, but in the japanese learning communities there is this thing where in order to reach a fully fluent level they speak japanese every day, and ONLY japanese, no matter where they live, I am sad to say that the people that form the community may be a bit mentally disturbed.

Great OP, wish the thread was a bit more active.

I think this guy is still way to nice. I obviously don't speak 46 languages, but it's really apparent how horrendous his pronunciation is for most of the languages. Even the ones, where people say he might have some knowledge. I don't think he knows German or Arabic at a B1 level.
I'm honestly almost amazed, how he managed to make so many different languages sound the same.
It's also very funny that he comments about European grammar being hard, while showing of languages that have equally complex grammar. Also I feel like languages that have less strict grammar are actually harder to master because the native way of speaking is way harder to grasp.
(Every mistake in this post is ironic and really funny.)

By the way, I'd like to see some content similar to this video (tearing down """polyglot""" scammers), but with a more focus on actual grammar and vocab analysis, not just pronunciation and accent. Any recommendations?
I think they don't really exist, because most of the stuff these polyglots say is really short and either constructed by another person or straight up google translate. So I guess it's not really worth it to start a community effort to expose something so obviously fake.
I think it's really sad that even the channels that try to expose the scammers, seem to have too much respect for the bigger youtubers. They are rarely explicitly named and are given way more benefit of the doubt.

I'm not sure if this is the greatest thread for this, but I recently came across this video (archive) from MattVsJapan on Instagram and it made me MATI. He just bitches that Japanese staff in Tokyo tend to address him in English and hand him English menus, even though his Japanese is already so hecking jouzu from watching anime and reading manga and stuff dude. He then acknowledges that this action obviously serves a practical purpose in the vast majority of circumstances, but, like some sort of butthurt nigger, still tries to make it seem like that 1% of cases hurts or is even worth pointing out.
This sort of soft entitlement from (typically) Americans in Japan really gets under my skin. I don't know much about MattVsJapan specifically, but it strikes me that a lot of these Japan expat guys, people like Debito Arudou, get a sense of satisfaction from finally getting to become an oppressed minority who whinges about everything. If you really have a problem with the Japanese handing you an English menu at a restaurant, perhaps try moving out of the most populated, globalized, and touristy place in the entire country? 迷惑だわ

A happening, potentially a funny one, has hit the conlang community.

Sonja Lang is the creator of Toki Pona, a constructed artificial language popular with trannies and Internet pedophiles - but I repeat myself.

It is known for its extreme minimalism and some interesting design choices - out of only one hundred and forty total words in this language, one is designated specifically to mean "transgender" - and another is written with the following hieroglyph:

The cutesy anime emoticon is how you write the word "suwi" in Toki Pona.

The creator's identity was the subject of some debate in this very forum, with some users alleging Sonja, the nerdy trans-friendly woman that was autistic enough to develop an artificial language, is nothing other than sissified alter ego of Canadian translator Christian Richard - and some others denying even the possibility, citing encounters with Sonja in person. @Rusty Metal Skull Gun and @Gilgamesh, please feel free to provide some input on the matter as you would be more knowledgeable than I am.

Recently, however, the convoluted saga has taken an unexpected turn, as another name for Toki Pona's creator has been unveiled.

That name is Major General Liwā’ Alufah Musk, Chief of Chaplains (US Army), liberator of Ahad.

The name change has been followed by a flurry of posts on the official Toki Pona X account. Here are some recent ones that I found interesting:

The main website, tokipona.org, has also received a minor islamic makeover somewhere between April 20th (A) and April 27th (A).

Several prominent community members have hastily issued a response that recommends everyone to jump ship to a different website kept more closely under their control.

Being diligent pronoun respecters, they of course use Sonja's newly chosen name throughout. :story:

What do we think? Elaborate performance art fueled by politisperging? A community terminally infested by trannies slowly driving a well-meaning woman to a freakout of epic proportions? Is the new Dimensional Merge happening as foreseen?

The situation continues to unfold on 𝕏, and on a newly created forum on the social network Skool. Toki Pona speakers of Kiwi Farms are urgently invited to translate the new developments.

I thought this part was particularly funny. How they're given clear evidence of 'this chick's nuuuuuuuuts' but every rule of transism has to be adhered to. And they can't say quite what's going on because 'we're not doctors'.

I do wonder what caused this particular craziness break, if anything in particular. I'm... really doubting this is performative, the skitzorambles are good enough to make, IMO, faking unlikely.

I should point out that the word, tonsi, is an unofficial addition to the language, or at least it was as of the last time I checked. Here's a fragment from one of my posts in this thread summarizing the matter:
Right, I'd completely forgotten about this. It's so fucking funny to me that faggots took a language with a word count well beneath the needed minimum, and added a word specifically for themselves, the narcissists.
So, a Canadian woman has a mental breakdown and starts loving Muslims. It's like I'm in the Canada is a failed state thread.

With the changing of the guard, I do wonder if they'll hold to the minimalism or import a whole bunch of those kind of additions. Given typical group behavior in this kind of thing, I'd bet on the latter.

Worry not, they've already gone in a similar direction: There are dictionaries listing the meanings of compound words, thousands of them, so that people can refer to things such as coffee unambiguously. If this sounds like it completely defeats the point of the language, it does. As it happens, there's such a thing as too simple, and toki pona exemplifies it. All that results is a new language without the necessary scaffolding.

That name is Major General Liwā’ Alufah Musk, Chief of Chaplains (US Army), liberator of Ahad.

The latest Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army was Major General William Green Jr, who was removed from that role by Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth. No one has been appointed yet to replace Major General Green, so the post is currently vacant.

Whoever "Liwa" is, they are a fraud, and are likely committing an act of stolen valor since they are highly unlikely to be an actual Major General.

Tokipona is the ugliest looking "language". But my thoughts aside holy shit this is true golden schizo babble!

EDIT: I feel I ought to elaborate, it's no small feat to create a language, and in some ways making it as simple as possible with as few words as possible is even more impressive. Whether you can express creative or advanced concepts in the language is irrelevant, it's a system.

It's not an uncommon trait for schizophrenics to have a strange fascination with language and the system of words.
Sonja Lang supposedly made the language to 'simplify her thoughts and communication' (according to Wikipedia). This new rebirth to Major General Liwa Musk (PBUH) is probably actually schizophrenia manifesting. And to be honest, anyone referring her as General Musk or interacting with her like these delusions are in any way valid is honestly not helping. It'll likely cause the delusions to stick even longer.

I knew a guy with schizophrenia once. On medication he was quite normal, nice to be around. On other days he was big Chief Sitting Bull and you could NOT have a conversation with him. It was like a completely different person. Perhaps this is what is happening here.

As posted earlier, she's likely in hospital. I hope she gets the help she needs. A collapse of mental sanity is the worst thing to deal with when you yourself do not know you are sick. This has all the markings of a long battle with mental health.

Esperantist Youtuber Richard Delamore got in touch with her family and it appears that the mental illness is real. I unfortunately don't have a screenshot of the comment where he announced this because the video he made about her mental breakdown has been privated since he first uploaded it.

∃R without any quantifiers is such a funny thing to write "there exists a set called the Reals" is really fucking funny.

I've never gotten into it, but I always thought that Toki Pona was a neat novelty language.
I'm also pretty confident that trans was not one of the original words, but I haven't checked the original word list. These five year old reddit comments seem to back us up though:
Screenshot_20260502-203727_1.png
It's very telling that someone specifically tries to create a word for trans in a language that doesn't really use gender.

It's not an uncommon trait for schizophrenics to have a strange fascination with language and the system of words.

This absolutely comes off as a schizophrenic break! It's kind of surprising at her age, especially since depression was a problem before. To my knowledge schizophrenia can be triggered by traumatic events and it's kind of uncommon to have completely unrelated mental health problems for over a decade without having any signs of it.

is this an actual women? Trannyism really wasn't popular when this started but then schizophrenia in women is also quite rare.
If she was, she would have probably created a word for trans, which she apparently didn't.
