America was funding the Afghan Mujahideen not the Pakistani Taliban during the whole Soviet invasion. The Taliban didn't cross over into Afghanistan until after the Soviets had completely left the country. I have to agree, the US is going for economic unrest in Iran as the kindling for a revolution. My friend in a country that borders Iran says its getting ugly with people leaving trying to escape the hyperinflation. The Strait is Irans biggest lifeline for trade and with a defacto no-fly zone already in place, theres no way ground trade via Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia can replace sea trade. Currently commercial truck trade is down due to security concerns, so Iran is mainly trying to keep their economy going by rail which hits a cap. Part of the reason why Iran wants to move the capital or at least start another city in Chabahar is because of this very concern, if you cut off the Strait, Iran withers.

The war has thrown around one million people out of work directly and another million indirectly, according to early estimates cited by Gholamhossein Mohammadi, an official at Iran’s Labor and Social-Affairs ministry. If I loan my friend $100 dollars, and a month passes, and I ask him "hey what did you do with that $100?" and they shrug and say "I don't know?" - that doesn't mean I don't know how much money I gave him (it would still be $100), it means I don't know what he spent it on.

Even assuming the situation is as bad as you imply (which your own article clarifies is more of an "incomplete" than a "fail") - we know what the US government GAVE to the Pentagon, what the issue is what they SPENT it on.

IOW, you can eliminate every single penny of defense-related spending, and our national debt would still be growing. If LBJ's Great (haha) Society bullshit didn't exist, we'd have had a SURPLUS of $319 billion last fiscal year.
