What really stands out to me, as a forner barfly, is that he doesn't even have bar buddies. For the uninitiated, these are people that are regularly at the bar at the same time/day as you, like in Cheers. You often don't know their last name or where they live, but for a couple hours on a Thursday night you set the world to rights, play a little pool and have a low key good time.
He must be as abrasive IRL as he is online if he can't even get himself accepted among a group like that.

Even only going to the bar once a week or once every two weeks, after several years you can probably find some friendly middle-aged guys to talk to, or you get to know the bartenders. I went to a place for the first time and ended up chatting about the baseball game to some guy I'd never met before, and I'm an extremely socially anxious autistic loser.

My guess is that he sits there with his laptop open, not saying anything, to try to get people to ask him what he's doing, upon which he replies "I'm a professional author, child." Then he fatly drinks half the bar's beer stock.
