Is it really just blind optimism though? I've said it before with various doomers but genuinely if you think that there's a 0% chance and there's nothing worth hoping or fighting for, what reason do you have to not just kill yourself and get it over with? To eke out a meager existence as an animal, living in constant dread of 'the inevitable' ? Surely something other than fear of death or just pure spite keeps you going. The reason people assume doomers have internalized or fetishize the abuse and act as beaten dogs is because it's frankly delusional and illogical to be so pessimistic and not just end it. Sure, its fairly unlikely for a downward trend to reverse, and often a total collapse happens and some new society shows up and the cycle begins anew, but just as often there has been a renaissance and revival. Why not fight for it, instead of insisting doom and destruction awaits for you and your immediate descendants, if applicable? It must be nice to think there's a light at the tunnel? It must be hell to believe there's only darkness! What do you even stand to gain by being "correct" in that scenario?

The post was a mistake but it isn't the end of the world. I think there is a good chance he won't make a serious apology unless pressed extremely hard on the matter. While this incident can be dismissed as a bad joke or something done in bad taste, if he keeps making posts like it then be really worried then.

President Trump himself is known for having a big ego as well a turbulent and perhaps strange relationship with his own personal faith:

He isn't exactly unfamiliar with Christian theology either as his mother, a devout Christian, sent him to confirmation classes at a Presbyterian church in his formative years. The Pope does deserve some criticism but at the same time Trump is someone who sees prosperity gospel televangelist Paula White-Cain as a serious spiritual advisor and has given her positions in his administration twice.

We live in peculiar times.

That’s the problem. You people are genuinely shocked when you see someone who’s devoted. God said the path is narrow so it’s not really surprising that even most Christian’s won’t care, as evidenced by this thread where Christian’s can’t even have a uniform take on this and at the very least say “yeah, that post was in poor taste. He shouldn’t have posted that.”

Trump was all in on closure initially.

He did leave it mostly up to govenors, but he also never pushed hard to reopen. His advisors (Brixx… Fauci) were catastrophically awful.
