On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the global Jewish population stands at 15.8 million, according to data released Sunday by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), a figure that remains below pre-World War II levels.
Of the total, about 7.2 million Jews, roughly 45% of the global Jewish population, live in Israel, while approximately 6.3 million, about 40%, reside in the United States. Together, the two countries are home to about 85% of Jews worldwide.

By comparison, in 1939, on the eve of World War II, the global Jewish population was estimated at 16.6 million, with only 449,000, about 3%, living in what would later become the State of Israel.

Distribution around the world​

Beyond Israel and the United States, Jewish communities are spread across several countries, though in significantly smaller numbers.

France has about 436,000 Jews, Canada 407,000, the United Kingdom 315,000, Argentina 168,000, Germany 126,000, Russia 120,000 and Australia 117,000.

Compared with data published two years ago, the Jewish population has declined in several countries. France saw a slight drop from 440,000 to 436,000, while Russia experienced a sharper decline from 132,000 to 120,000, nearly 10% over two years. Argentina also recorded a decrease, from 171,000 to 168,000.
In contrast, Canada saw an increase despite a rise in reported antisemitic incidents, growing from 398,000 in 2023 to 407,000 in the latest report.

Holocaust survivors in Israel​

According to the CBS, about 111,000 Holocaust survivors and victims of antisemitic persecution during the Holocaust era are currently living in Israel.
Women make up 63% of survivors, while men account for 37%.
Approximately 6% of survivors immigrated to Israel before the establishment of the state. About 30.2% arrived during the major immigration wave between 1948 and 1951, another 30.2% between 1952 and 1989, and roughly one-third, 33.6%, immigrated since the 1990s, mainly from former Soviet Union countries.

Aging population​

The data highlights the advanced age of Holocaust survivors.
About 37% were born between 1939 and 1945 and are now between 80 and 85 years old. Around 35% are aged 86 to 89, while approximately 28% are aged 90 or older.
Nearly half, 49.3%, are widowed, while 38.2% are married, 10.6% divorced and about 2% single. Of the married survivors, 18,700 are married to another survivor, meaning there are currently about 9,300 households in Israel where both partners are Holocaust survivors.

Where survivors live​

Around 95% of Holocaust survivors in Israel live in urban areas, with only about 5% residing in rural communities, a distribution similar to the general population.
About 42% live in large cities with populations exceeding 200,000. Approximately 7,500 reside in Haifa, 7,100 in Jerusalem, 6,000 in Tel Aviv-Yafo, 5,500 in Ashdod, 5,400 in Netanya, 4,700 in Petah Tikva, and about 4,600 each in Beersheba and Rishon Lezion.
The data, compiled using information from the Authority for the Rights of Holocaust Survivors, underscores both the global distribution of Jewish communities and the aging population of survivors, as the world marks Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Yes, but again: USSR. Stalin spent the 1930s killing shitloads of people in there. If people started poking around for jew graveyard from the Nazis they would find them, alongside with Kulak graves, pole graves (hello Katyn), cossack graves, noble graves, trotskyist graves and so on.

The number of deaths has been exaggerated for political effect and emotional blackmail, but it was still a lot of people. The usual denialist reply is 271k but I think the revisionist number is around 2 million. I wonder if the 6 million number actually comes from the USSR conveniently throwing their own kills onto the total to hide their own skeletons in the closet with the conveniently dead and reviled Nazi regime. Cemeteries can be considered as potential sources of soil and groundwater contamination in burial places where there is no system for collecting and treating necroleachate, effluent rich in organic matter and inorganic elements produced during the decomposition of corpses (Jonker and Olivier, 2012; Oliveira et al., 2013). Depending on the region, the high levels of precipitation and the lack of maintenance increases the spread of the necroleachate (Żychowski, 2012). This effect could be prevented with the right construction conditions, thus diminishing the access of the necroleachate (Netto et al., 2021).

Besides the traditional burials, the corpses are submitted to a combustion process, denominated as cremation. In this process, the corpse is carbonized until the remains are ashes, this process leads to the emission of several pollutants such as combustion gases (CO, NOx, SO2), mercury (due to dental amalgams), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) (Mari and Domingo, 2010).

Reports show that cemetery pollution produces an alteration in microbiological components, and increases the prevalence of heavy metal and toxic organic pollutants (TOCs) in the soil and subterranean water, being even discovered in the air (Neckel et al., 2017). This issue of contamination is intensified in urban cemeteries concerning its environs, due to the absence of management and treatment of the effluents emitted by decomposing bodies, the necro slurry, which is a grayish-colored liquid with a terrible odor (Neckel et al., 2017). This liquid has a density higher than that of water and, therefore, acquires good dispersion and mobility, facilitating its passage to underground wells, thus extending to wider regions of contamination (Uçisik and Rushbrook, 1998).

Among the contaminants leached into the water table, heavy metals are among the most detected in several studies (Amuno and Amuno, 2014a; Dalmora et al., 2020; Natali et al., 2016; Silva et al., 2020; Spongberg and Becks, 2000). The population that lives near these areas is more subject to contamination, putting their health at risk. Elevated levels of metallic elements in the bloodstream can cause damage such as Cu cause problems in the human neurological system (Loef and Walach, 2012); Zn: ingestion can cause liver disease (Morillas et al., 2019); Fe: can cause corrosion in the gastrointestinal tract and liver cirrhosis (Loef and Walach, 2012; Morillas et al., 2019); Pb: is a potent neurotoxin and can cause problems in the central nervous system (Kortei et al., 2020); Cr: can generate lung cancer in humans (Fu et al., 2020); Cd: excess can cause osteoporosis (Husejnovic et al., 2017); Ni: has been classified as a human carcinogen (Li et al., 2020).

Crematoria contribute approximately 5% of total PCDD/Fs, 6% of total Hg emissions and 0.25% of PM2.5 emissions in Canada.

Cremation in Canada has seen steady growth, with the national cremation rate reaching approximately 76.7% in 2024, up from 73.7% in 2020. Total deaths in Canada have also risen, exceeding 300,000 annually as of 2021. The country is projected to see cremation rates reach 80.7% by 2029, with some provinces, like British Columbia, already exceeding 90%.

For example, the Korherr Report - one of the most important documents of the Holocaust, yet generally unused and un-cited by both sides.

Dr. Richard Korherr was Himmler’s statistician. In 1942 he was commissioned by Himmler to compile a down-to-the-last-Jew report detailing how many Jews had been killed, how many had fled, and how many were still alive (and where). This wasn’t a public document; it was Himmler’s-eyes-only (with a condensed version prepared for Hitler).

Himmler wanted exact figures.

Korherr, with unfettered access to all SS documents, definitively concluded that as of the beginning of 1943, slightly over 2.4 million Jews had been killed in the Reinhard camps, the Ostland ghettoes (which functioned as death camps), and by the Einsatzgruppen execution squads.

You’d think that Himmler’s official death census would be in every Holocaust book. But no. “Great” scholars like Yad Vashem’s Yehuda Bauer rarely if ever cite it (in his 1982 magnum opus A History of the Holocaust, Bauer doesn’t cite Korherr once).

Deniers never cite Korherr either.

Amazing, huh? With the Mao and Stalin death toll, we’re forced to roughly calculate the figure via demographic extrapolation. But with the Holocaust, we have the main perpetrator, Himmler, commissioning a specific census of the murdered. A number. Everyone agrees it’s a legit document, yet few use it.

Why?

Because if you accept 2.4 million for the beginning of 1943, you cannot get to six million by April 1945. From ‘43 to ‘45, there would simply not be enough Jews subjected to “aktions” to get to 6 mil. Every mainstream scholar agrees that by the close of 1942, two-thirds of all Holocaust deaths had already occurred. So Korherr’s figure presents a problem.

That’s why I put my approximate figure of total Holocaust dead at 3.5 to 3.6 million. But not six. You simply cannot get to six in the two remaining years of the war.

Meanwhile, deniers won’t accept a figure above 271,000. Accepting 2.4 million by 1943? That blasphemes the tenets of their cult. It can’t be more than 300,000, period! Their pseudo-religion dictates it.

So the Korherr Report, being too low a number for the mainstream and too high for the deniers, gets buried. I had to find all this shit out for myself with no fucking Internet, dudes. So again I say, two years pre-Internet is not that long a time to get into something, learn some things, make some mistakes, learn from the mistakes, and get out.

And lest you think my estimate of 3.5-3.6 million is a crime of denial, I’ll point out that Gerald Reitlinger, in his 1953 masterwork The Final Solution (still considered the gold standard in the field), gave, for the final death count, a range of 4.1 to 4.5 million. There’s not much space between my 3.6 and Reitlinger’s 4.1, and I’m always open to anyone who can defend Reitlinger’s number, or even Hilberg’s 5.1 mil. But as I said, the extremists who despise me, and the extremists who idolize me, share a similar trait - they like speaking about me but never to me.

I want to make one more point, relating to the above text. The two extremes in this matter - I wouldn’t call it a “debate” because deniers have nothing to debate, but the two extremes are, odd as this may sound, comfortable with each other. I know that sounds weird, as the two “sides” despise each other. But they know each other, they know each other’s weaknesses. They know how to “dunk” on each other. It’s the inadvertent camaraderie of familiar enemies. But the six mil and not one less and the 300,000 and not one more inflexibles don’t really know what to do with a guy like me. It’s not that I’m “middle ground;” the Holocaust as commonly taught is 90% accurately taught. But I do have certain differences with the mainstream narrative (which I listed in my banned book, and perhaps in my next long-form Substack piece I’ll outline them again, with updates).

Hence the desire of both extremes to keep me in 1992; it’s their shared comfortable battlefield.

Most of the 110.000 survivors were not in camps they were Jews who were in Europe but escaped. A lot of these people probably saw the war less than your average European. There are Holocaust survivors who were born around the time Germany was defeated.

I don't think it would be easy to tell after not only 80 years, but also 50 years of communist government (which as we all know had a shoddy record at best when it came to polution and Health and Safety).

Mercury remains on the ground and riverbeds for centuries, that's how we know metallurgy in bronze age settlements for example.

A good benchmark would be to compare soil pollution levels from the region from 1939 vs 1949 for example and see if there's a pattern of mercury and lead deposits increasing during the war years.
Probably wouldn't work on places like Auschwitz where there were industrial facilities built, but there were smaller extermination only camps next to rural settlements with barely any industry would be a good bet.
