Crime Nestlé says 413,793 KitKat candy bars stolen en route from Italy to Poland - Bars of Chocolate

GENEVA (AP) — Swiss food giant Nestlé says about 12 tons, or 413,793 candy bars, of its KitKat chocolate brand were stolen after leaving its production site in Italy earlier this week for Poland.

The company, based in Vevey, Switzerland, said in a statement Friday that “the vehicle and its load are still nowhere to be found.”

The shipment of the crunchy bars, made of waffles covered with chocolate, disappeared last week while en route between production and distribution locations. The chocolate bars were to be distributed throughout Europe.

The missing candy bars could enter unofficial sales channels across European markets, the company said, but if this does happen, all products can be traced using the unique batch code assigned to individual bars.

A spokesperson for KitKat said that as a result, consumers, retailers and wholesalers would be able to identify if a product is part of the stolen shipment by scanning the on-pack batch numbers. If a match is found, the scanner will be given clear instructions on how to alert the company, which will then share the evidence appropriately.

“Whilst we appreciate the criminals’ exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes,” KitKat said in a statement.

“With more sophisticated schemes being deployed on a regular basis, we have chosen to go public with our own experience in the hope that it raises awareness of an increasingly common criminal trend,” the statement added.

Thankfully the twin truck that was attached split off during the heist and made it safely to it's destination.

Lmao there's not a single hand will touch these half million things that cares anything about any derpy codes.

How does a consumer or a jeetmart "scan" do they want you to get a (jeetcoded) kitkat app (gps permissions required) help them find their lost shit or something?

Was a jeet driving the truck?

So, most of Europe are involved then.

Let's just hope that those "unofficial sales channels" are going to scan these bar codes and let Nestle know they've bought stolen chocolate bars then.

It'll be easy enough to track them down - just look for cities with suddenly increased levels of diabetes.

I like the idea that this was a vanity heist by a mobster boss. Like it's all stacked in some Reservoir dog type industrial building just getting picked away at leisure and not for sale. This theoretical Don has good tastes, as Kit-kats are the greatest of all checkout-line candies.

KitKat bars are stackable so they've actually been used as a black market currency for years.

Coffee crisp bars would like a word with you about that

There's a lot of Polacks in US commercial driving, I wouldn't be surprised if it was also a Polack here. The way to incentivize scanning would be to setup a simple webpage that can be wrapped in apps for iPhone/android. Most phone cameras already have integrated scanners. Offer a 4:1 coupon for reports that catch the stolen bars, maybe make each catch a submission in a sweepstakes.

Stores could strike through the codes of course but then customers would want to know why they can't scan that store's bars. You don't need many hits to sort this out. Probably a losing proposition in terms of cost but it does send the message that stealing from them is a losing proposition.

So they must have the identity of the driver, who was probably implicated.

Also, do they expect these to be found by someone "scanning the code"? Like they're obviously going to try to bypass that. Even if it's by manipulating the bars with their filthy hands and repackage.

5 years ago and i would have agreed with you, but the chocolates quality has gone down hard recently. they taste like those netted bags of 99% palm oil milk chocolate they sell at the dollar store now and theres way less of the biscuit inside. I dont know why they don't sell coffee crisps outside of leafland.

This reminded me of "what's the difference between Madonna and a Kit Kat?

You only get 5 fingers in a Kit Kat".

I just bought one at the convenince store today (craved waxy tasteless chocolate, I guess) am, am I a party to an international crime?

If so?

Cool!

I demand a nickname in quotes when I get indicted, just like the old school mafia used to get.... Towin "The Rollin' Coalin' " Karz sounds nice.
