Nick is the type of drug addict that would kill himself within a year if he could from a drug overdose, I promise you that if he didn't have kids he would already have been dead from drugs.

He's basically just a whiny, entitled bratty child in the body of a grown man. One of those people who will remember every perceived slight by someone (for example, his parents not buying him a toy as a child), but conveniently forget everything they have done for him (like how much his parents have financially supported him in adulthood).
