Sure you can send in the MEF in full force, but the Iranians have a lot of coastal defense platforms that might sink an LST or two, or even a destroyer or cruiser escort. that would be completely intolerable losses to both the command and the public. So you send in a couple SOF teams to infiltrate the coastal or island base, neutralize the coastal defense systems, and then boogie out of there.
