The real issue is Ukraine is a corrupt slavic despotocracy, and the US has concerns about Ukraine being given a bunch of effective modern weapons and what they'll do with them after the situation is resolved.
Ukraine may not want to stop rolling back Russia at the 1991 borders. Ukraine might decide that if they threw back Russia, they can take Romania. Maybe its time to settle border issues with Moldova and Hungary now they they have the worlds most battle-hardened army.
Adding to this the abyssmal state of Europeans weapon production, and the fact the US' side of that was gutted by Clinton and then again by Obama.

So the US is stuck with a problem where they aren't thrilled with the horse they have to back, but they also can't let Putin get away with it again, so they have to. And of course, god forbid shit really hits the fan and NATO boots have to be deployed into combat.

If we hadn't been utterly raping Iran from the skies and had just let the people protest wholly unaided, China would've likely started sending weapons and Iran would be recruiting Chinese in exchange for like 5 years worth of Chinese wages like what was happening in Ukraine with Russia. IMHO the only way that this situation could've worked with even less American involvement is if protestors somehow managed to get a massive chunk of the military on their side AND had decapitated a majority of their government before the Chinese or Russians could get largely involved.
