I'm retarded - can someone explain how this damage is enough to total the car? I assume a major factor is that the car is (relatively) old and this worth diddly squat.
Someone recently told me a car is technically totaled when the repair cost is more than the actual value. Not sure if this is true.

Yes that's true - PL, but it happened to me once. I feel a miniscule amount of sympathy for Mr. Stancil here because getting your car written off sucks and the car market is garbage right now. Only about as much sympathy as he would afford an upstanding conservative fella like me though (not much).

Late 90s/Early 00s liberal here […]
But back then liberals were non-mainstream.
I would dispute that and say back then liberals had the perception they were non-mainstream but were still the mainstream. By that point, the mainstream had already been hijacked by the liberals from the 60s and 70s, who dishonestly painted the more-visible-but-functionally-fringe religious right as having anywhere near the presence the republicans had mid-century.

The rear hatch and the rear quarters are the most (or very) expensive parts to fix. The rear quarter can't be replaced by a spare part and the rear hatch and glass are expensive.

yes that's true. Brought my first car and got rear ended by a boomer a few months later. Fixing the frame, wheel etc would have cost more than just buying a new one so I got another from the same place. Still fucked my insurance for years even tho i was confirmed 100% blameless.

Yes. If he has collision insurance on it, he will either pay his deductible (usually $500 or $1000) and the insurance will pay for it to be repaired. If the insurance company deems the repair cost more than the value of the car, then he should get a payout for the value of the car minus his deductible.
The Kelley Blue Book is one service that provides estimates of a car's value. You can search by license plate number. You have to input the mileage and condition of the car. This estimate is for 100,000 miles and good condition. It seems a bit high to me.

I know nothing about car repairs, but I'm not seeing any damages that would total the exact value of the car or higher. Can someone who knows cars help me out?

EDIT: nevermind already answered.

True, though I believe the term is economic write-off.

The damage on the photos is weird. Like this isn't the impact of a normal car, but rather it must have been a vehicle with bull bars and high ground clearance.

Why? It's the car of the Herrenrasse.
