Women went back home after WWII. The legislation requiring companies to hire more women was part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which was enormously popular with women, and various lawsuits were filed by women in the 70s, 80s, and 90s to force companies to hire more women and force men to stop doing things that upset women (like make fat jokes in your presence). My favorite is how airlines were forced to hire fat, unpleasant stewardesses in the 90s. If you want pleasant stewardesses whose asses don't graze your shoulder as they waddle by, you have to go with foreign airlines.
