Stud, you can fire a homebuilt AR platform with only iron sights to like 500 yards (I've done it). Once built, you feed it ammo, solvent, patches, some grease, and love. Give it an optic and now you're sitting pretty against a HUGE array of enemies that you can come up against (pistols, shotguns, certain long rifles) and you can punch a hole in armor and it's not super heavy.
