I lived within walking distance of a school in an almost suburb and was bussed cross-city to the actual ghetto and put into a "magnet" school which I found out was actually code for "90% black public school."
I heard stories of exactly the same thing. It basically damaged otherwise-bright White kids for life, even if they had been in gifted programs beforehand. My impression was that the parents of such poor benighted kids could have fought it but didn't.
