He wasn't Stasi per se but a KGB liaison to the Stasi. The Soviet Union kept a close eye on the secret police of its satellites for obvious reasons.He was still Stasi, still a part of the GDR government apparatus of spying and subjugating its own people.
Fun fact - the two names mean the same thing in English, Ministry of State Security.
Most of it was economic, not political. West Germany had received Marshall Plan aid, paid better and more importantly in hard currency that could be used to buy Western products, the GDR was under pressure of crippling Soviet sanctions until the mid-1950s, causing large amounts of its production to be sent eastward and living standards depressed.You do realize the Berlin wall was to keep East Germans from escaping one of the most paranoid and intrusive governments there has been in the 20th century, right?
The Wall was a necessity to stop emigration of skilled professionals but there was zero justification for using lethal force to stop illegal crossings, though.
That is just murder.
